Hi guys, after riding a Suzuki bandit 600 for so long during my rider training, I struggling with riding around town a sports bike. When going at around 30mph in 4th gear and trying to accelerate...that bike just doesn't wanna go, the torque is terrible. So my question is, what gears do you guys/girls use going 20/30/40 mph.

Or 2nd. Your bike is geared for 155mph in top gear, you'll want to batter it like a mail order Slovakian bride.

If you like changing gears, you'll want a smaller engine. If you want to ride the torque, twin it up.

1st gear - till the Rev limiter kicks in

2nd gear - till the Rev limiter kicks in

3rd gear - Do you see a pattern emerging here?.

4th gear - oh come on!

not on the ZZR

basically, you want to keep the revs above 3000rpm, I'm generally crusing around 5000rpm, coming down the gears if I dip below 5k then I drop down a gear

Round town I tend to be in 1st or 2nd, possibly coming up into 3rd for 40mph+

4th gets used on country lanes, 5th and 6th I tend to only use on the motorway

7k is where the bike is most responsive as that's where the torque kicks in. It has a 14,000rpm redline, don't be afraid to take it up there

Don't worry about specific gears look at RPM. I rarely used to let my ZZR go under 5000. 7000 is where the fun begins and under 4000 it's an asthmatic bastard.

Oh come on, I cant believe the OP hasn't figured out that he obviously needs to use the ZZR higher in the rev range all by himself.

If a bike doesn't pick up its skirts and go when you open the throttle its obvious that the gear you're in is too high.

This has got to be a wind up, hasn't it???

It can take some figuring out. OP got used to a Bandit 600 good for maybe 125mph and expected a 155mph ZZR to be at least as zoomy at the same revs in each gear.

The ZZR is quicker because it will ultimately make more power if you rev it higher. But you have to rev it. 30mph in 4th on a Bandit will likely deliver more usable torquepowers than 30mph in 4th on a ZZR. It's when you get into 5 digits that the story changes.

When I tried a CBR600F I was astonished by how gutless it felt compared to my 'slower' GS because I kept knocking it up the gears. It was only when I figured out that I needed to rev the nuts out of each gear that I realised: how quick it could be; and that I don't particularly want to ride like that.

tl;dr version - thrash it or change bikes.

I've only had my licence 6 days, its my first bike so I'm still trying to figure things out. I was just worried keeping the rpm higher all the time would damage the engine somehow.

Have you found this to be ok over time or does it cause more wear and tear?

It's designed to be ridden like that, you won't damage it.

You can rev a bike as hard as you like as long as you're not bouncing off of the limiter constantly. Modern bikes (read anything more modern than about 1980) are designed to rev.

30mph in 4th is totally ridiculous. I do 30mph in 2nd on my Street Triple a lot of the time. Ride the bike like a bike, not like it is a car. I'd guess that you shouldn't be in 4th until at least 40mph, maybe more depending on the gearing, but basically just rev the nuts off of the thing. As long as you get regular servicing done you can ride it as hard as you like. In fact, keeping low revs and labouring the engine is MORE likely to do damage than revving the heck out of it.

I totally agree with everyone in here. I did a little swap for a bit on my friends R6, below 5k it just didn't move, get to 10k+ and it takes off.

Even on the Blackbird, around town I'd keep it in second, although in 4-6 @ 30-40mph it will still take off without hesitation.

As you only recently passed I can see why you're a little apprehensive. Just take it easy and when you have a safe stretch of road play around with it a little and see what it's like in different gears at different speeds.

OP should never buy an RG500.

I'm one more day of commute away from getting my ZZR600 to 60k miles!

At 30, I'm most likely to be in third. That leaves me with some get up n go. I do ride at 30 in 4th, too. But at that I know I've got little torque. In 2nd gear it just makes loads of noise, and it's very sensitive to throttle (surprise surprise) so not as smooth as third.

60 mph at 6k revs in 5th
50 mph at 5k revs in 5th
50 mph at 6k revs in 4th
40 mph at 5k revs in 4th

That pattern pretty much continues. the revs are rough, let's say plus/minus 500.

If you want to drive it like a car, low revs it'll drive like a car and be better than a micra. If you drop a gear you're faster than the beemahs. Go a gear lower ... reeeeeeeevvvvvvvvv full throttle powwaaahhhh

Hi

As above, but does it have a standard exhaust? The stock exhaust on the ZZR rots away quickly and a lot of people just fit a replacement 4>1 system. These tend to leave them even weaker in the mid range.

All the best

Katy

We may be safe, it's not in New Bikers or the Workshop.

But then you can never be sure. Ever. It's tense moments like these that make life worth living.

As a general rule don't bother with the gear number. If the bike (or car) feels like it's not got any go then you're in the wrong gear & you need to use a different one. I you're low in the rev range drop a gear or two, if you're high in the rev-range gear up.

I swap between an R1200RS (1200cc twin) and a Daytona 675 (675cc triple). I use 3rd & 4th around town on the BMW were as I tend to use 1st & 2nd on the Daytona. Interestingly using those gears results in very similar performance between the two bikes at 10-40mph.
