Me again, sorry Sad

So, The old man is trying to get the YBR back and running. lts been left for about a year now, covered, but not completely. rusty and a bit tatty in places, but we are going to use it as a project / learning bike.

Its a 61 ybr custom, so fuel injected.

Anyway, first lesson...

Key in... lights up, and fuel primes, but push the button, and absolutely nothing, not even a giggle. Same when I try and kick start it.

Where does one start to diagnose this?
Head to spark plug first?
Wiring? if so where?
There is no kill switch?
The kick stand switch was taken of ages ago, so it cant be that.

I am aware I am very much new to all this, but, hence starting with this bike. Simple enough and there is no pressure to get it fixed quickly and a bike that we are not afraid to get things wrong and learn from mistakes.

Thank you all in advance.

When you say nothing happens when you press the starter, do you mean literally nothing, or does it turn over but not fire?
Do the lights dim? Is there a click?
Is the neutral light showing?
Have you double-checked the sidestand switch bypass wiring to check it hasn't failed?
Is the battery fully charged, what voltage is it showing when you turn the bike on and when you press the starter?

Yup, literally nothing.

Nope, i don't think the lights dimmed.

Yup, neutral.

I will double check the switch bypass!

And I will double the voltage of the battery Smile

Assuming battery voltage is OK and your sidestand bypass is fine, I'd check the condition of the connectors going to the ignition switch and right hand controls, and check the operation of the starter switch with a multimeter. There could easily be some corrosion somewhere in that area.

This.

I had to open it up and clean the contacts with some 1000 grit. after it decided to play silly that day before I sold it.

If it doesn't kick start then I'd say you're not getting any spark.

I agree that kicking it should work if the stater switch is faulty - however if it's been set for a while it could take quite a few rotations of the engine to spring to life, which would seem like it not starting. It'd be easier to do this on the starter.

Alternatively, the faults could be linked, and the ignition disabled because the bike thinks it's in gear with the stand down, for example, which is also disabling the starter. That's why I think resolving why the stater button does nothing is a good first step - it may not be all that's wrong, but it makes subsequent testing easier (easier to look for a spark on your own using the starter than when kicking, for example).

Obvious but worth mentioning, make sure the killswitch is not on.

Ye pull the sparkplug, put in the lead and place on the head and see if you get spark when it turns over with the kicker.

Charge the battery before you do anything else. FI bikes do not like starting with low battery. When I've jump started my Speed 4 before I had to leave the jumper cable on for a good 10 minutes or the bike would die as soon as I removed them.
