The bike I am potentially looking at buying is a V twin but the guy says it’s not running 100% as it has a set of stubby cans on. He said if I get the thing dyno jetted to those cans it should be fine.

The guys at my local bike shop told me the cans are just always shi* and should be replaced with full length cans. This I suppose is due to the power/pulses from the engine but I wondered if someone could enlighten me further so I am armed with some more info when I go to see the bike.

My VTR runs with straight through remus full length cans, I don't think it has been dynojetted or anything like that but I cant imagine the length of the can to be all that critical if it has no baffles (apart from noise levels)

Anyway if you're buying from a shop it should be running well or very very cheap on the basis that if they cant get it to run well and are just selling it on then there must be something badly up with it! I mean if a bike shop could just get their mechanic to fit a dynojet kit then profit I'm sure they would!

Pretty sure thats not a V-twin.

But yes, stubby cans can cause carburation problems.

Ok, parallel twin with the firing changed to make it sound like a V twin?

Thumbs Up

To be fair though, they did use the ''270° crankshaft'' to mimic a V-twin engine characteristics. Razz

To be fair it didn't give it the perfect primary balance of a 90 degree v-twin just made an engine that vibrated a lot and needed massive crank webs to stop it exploding under the vibration.

This 'un? I guess not, that comes with the standard cans as well.

I bet it'll sail through its next MOT, right?

He might be right, but it's a 20 year old bike that you shouldn't throw money at. Do you really want to take it on as a project?

It’s no longer on eBay, he didn’t sell it…short by £50 on the reserve.
I believe it to be a good bike but I don’t know why he got rid of the original cans and kept these stubbys on if it runs sh*t.
It’s all good to go with an MOT and up to date servicing. He doesn’t use it a lot hence why he didn’t bother getting it setup right.

He didn't get rid of the original cans. They're in his loft and he hasn't refitted them as it would disprove his excuse. He'll sell them on ebay later.

He doesn't use it a lot because it runs sh*t.

I'd ride it and then decide.

Yep, going to see the bike before talking money.
He'll be able to hear me breaking the speed limit in his neighbourhood. Laughing
