Cursed bike!

Do you or have you ever had/own a bike that you think is cursed?

I took my Kawasaki for it's MOT today, nothing strange about that and it passed with no advisories
However every time I take that bike out of the garage , the weather turns shit
I really do mean EVERY time.
Wtf?

I took it touring last year and it rained every day and night for the entire tour.
I think in the last two/three years I have never had that bike out in the nice sunshine.

Well I had best get back to drying out all my kit again!

J call the Spacker the Stormbringer sometimes. It has a habit of raining just as soon as I think about going out for a spin.

I do believe that the ZXR750 I bought of Paul (don't know if he's still using Crippletron), was cursed.

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong with that.... it's a few years ago, so I may be forgetting some things or not having everything in the correct order:

Bought it with the top end needing rebuilt, rebuilt it and couldn't get it to start, stripped and rebuilt the top end, finally got it to start and had a nasty knock from the bottom end, snapped both engine mounting bolts trying to remove the engine, stripped the full engine down and found one of the big ends was worn to the thickness of tinfoil and the crankshaft had lost 2mm, bought a Very Good Condition engine from ebay which looked like it had been left at the bottom of a lake for a couple of years, found new engine was totally seized, used top end from old engine and bottom end from "new" engine, got bike running and forgot to connect the horns up and melted part of the loom (jumped off bike and ripped tank off when smoke started billowing out from under it, but because it was on a very slight hill the bike rolled forward slightly and fell over), repaired loom, found another problem with engine so stripped and rebuilt and forgot to tighten sump bolt and shat 80% of the oil over a 2 mile stretch of road, got bike running (like shit), found the valve clearances were all over the place, replaced shims, got bike running again but found both CCT's were fucked so made my own, got bike running again and the front brake pads fell out on the first test ride, managed to ride over to Bristol and the bike cut out and drained the battery trying to restart it so had to get it recovered, replaced the battery took it to Bristol again and it cut out again, had to get it recovered (again), charged battery and took it to Bristol again and it cut out again, called recovery and got it restarted and while letting it warm up the temperature gauge went into the red only to find one of the plugs was loose on the radiator thermo switch, drained battery and opened radiator filler cap too early and sprayed the contents of the cooling system over a 10 foot blast radius, got bike started the next day (after abandoning it in Bristol for the night), rode home with only one cut out, eventually got it to stay running but most of the times when I stopped at lights it would idle around 3.5-4k rpm unless I thumped the choke button......

Eventually after spending almost £1,000 I listed it on ebay and felt sorry for the new owner when it finally reached £400.

Everything on it went wrong. Problem was when you tried to fix it the nuts or bolts would round off on absolutely everything meaning a simple undo a couple of bolts to replace a part job suddenly became remove the bolt job..

Then replace the bolt job and or drill out the remainder of the old bolt.

Horrible.

Turned out to be a bike that wasn't supposed to be on the road either and was supposed to be destroyed.

Another Honda.
The CG125(BR-K). It's previous 1,275 owners had all added their own customisations. the slighty bent handlebars, the spliced wiring complemented by a droopy rear indicator. Its centerstand had been 'altered' many times and couldn't be trusted.

A kicks start added that was too long and angled so it would not only rattle at certain speeds it would slapback onto your calf when you started the wretched, souless, wobbly piece of crap.
A full 4 fingers on the lever and as much as you could squeeze...just dived it's pathetic head down.
Watch as its weedy little forks actually twist before your very eyes as you ask it to do corners.

Fixed it with hammers and sold it.

Lexmoto Arrow was mine. I'm not hoping on the chinese bashing bandwagon because I've got rid of it but rather me realising how much of a fried chip-shop special it really was was my long overdue reason to finally get rid of it rather than pump funds to keep it going.

Guaranteed visit needed between every service, if not multiple, for issues.

A bike you rented to endure suffering rather than owned.

My EXC seems cursed, always breaks even when put away working. Been nothing but trouble since I had it. I feel it's cursed as everytime a ride is planned something usually needs fixing.

First ever ride I had on it the chain snapped, took the clutch slave cylinder and ignition cover with it. That was the start of much misery and unenjoyable ownership, not to mention the torture on my wallet! In the 13 months I've owned it, it has had:

Clutch slave cylinder
Ignition cover
Countershaft seal kit
Brake light switch (front)
Spark plug cap
Ignition coil
Stator rewound
New clutch (technically no surprise)
Carb needed adjusting twice for poor running
Speedo is intermittent (magnet?)
Currently has the EXC death rattle (woodruff key I believe?)
Currently has an oil leak, needs topping up every other ride.
I think that's it.

Not bad for just over a years ownership!

I do believe my CBF1000 was cursed.

Not long after I had it, the rear brake light switch decided it would like to fill itself with water, but that was just the start...

I'd known about the fact that these bikes eat stators for breakfast, but I thought, nah, it'll never happen to me, oh God was I wrong!

After around 14.5k miles, I was coming down the motorway, not far from home and noticed that the light on my heated grips was flashing, got home, bike decided not to start, upon further inspection at a garage, the stator had indeed blown and I was gonna need a new one.

At around the 30k mark, I'm coming down the motorway from London and I notice that my heated grips light is flashing again, but I didn't notice this until too late when all of a sudden the power goes and I'm left yanking in the clutch and fighting my way from the outside lane of the M4 to the hard shoulder.

Yep, you guessed it, gone AGAIN, only this time it took the reg/rec and battery with it.

After a chat with my old Honda dealer, Honda agreed, as the bike was under 5 years old, they'd replace it with modified stator AND flywheel. I can't remember the exact mileage but it was around the 35-40k mark.

I book, it in to get it sorted, arrive at the dealer and after half an hour the mechanic called me around the back to have a look at something.

"you sure you've had this changed recently? " as he points to the stator

.... And sure enough as I'd rolled into the dealer and turned off the engine, it had eaten yet ANOTHER one!

Suffice to say, after the work was done, I decided I'd had my fill of Hondas for now and chopped it in for a lovely Fazer 8.

I've got a 1977 Yamaha V75A I'm trying to get back on the road. It's currently sat in a corner being ignored. The thing is cursed.

When I got it. I managed to get it running but none of the electrics worked. Got the electrics working and it bent (and then snapped) the bracket on the swingarm that holds the chain adjuster.

Replaced swingarm with pattern replacement. Then engine blew base and head gasket (as in blew them to pieces out the sides).

Rebuilt top end. Got bike running again.

Clutch went to hell again and again wrecked the (new) swingarm and snapped both chain adjusters. It's now sat like this until I regain the will to look at it.

Those are just the headline acts from it. It's also required me to drill out almost every fastener on it and just about any other annoying job you'd expect from a 40 year old cheap heap of shite.

My old Ducati M900...

It always felt like it was trying to kill me.

I'd flirt round a corner with no problems, next week, same corner, same conditions, same speed and nah, straight on. Happened on a regular basis, no idea why.

If you touched the back brake to settle it round a corner, it'd be great or it'd lock the back wheel with no rhyme or reason.

The petrol tank sprung a leak on the hinge at the bottom of the tank, petrol soaked trousers, so got that braised back up.

Then it killed the starter sprag bearing, flywheel bearing and flywheel. It took Ducati 3 goes to get the right flywheel and each time the price went up anyway, all back together, hit the starter button and the starter motor eats itself so I have to take it all apart again...

New starter fitted, out for a blat and an electrical connection decides to melt.

Fixed that, try again and more completely erratic handling, so I threw it in the garage and let the MoT run out. Sold it soon afterwards and seriously considered giving motorbikes up for good because of it.

I like Sam Lovegrove but yeah, I reckon a lot more work goes on than they admit, and they check the bike's over a lot more thoroughly before buying them (which would be interesting to show).
