good morning
If you book your own mod 1 re-test and using your own bike,
what are the options or who do you get to accompany you to the test centre,if you haven't or are unable to book through a school where normally,the instructor would accompany you?
Is it possible to do it this way ?

What bike is it? If it's a 125cc (or less) you don't need anyone with you at all.

Anything bigger and you'll need someone who has their license to take you there and back home.

it's an XT660.
I failed the second avoidance speedtrap...
Are you sure that's right,anyone with a full licence??

For clarity: you cannot (legally) just get a chum with a full licence to tail along while you ride the bike in. That does not validate your provisionaL entitlement.

Legal routes are:

Van; trailer; chum with a bike licence and valid insurance to ride your bike rides it in for you.

Definitely do not ride it around the corner then push it in yourself and slap L plates on it in the test centre car park. Wink

On that, you must display L plates front and rear to validate your entitlement any time you're on a "road", and the test centre car park arguably counts as such, so put them on even for mod 1. You do not have to wear hi-vis, but DVSA Derek might not know that, and will be used to seeing instructed candidates wearing it (it is a requirement while under big bike training, not while on test), so again, wear it.

Insurance, well, they'll ask but won't check. Your choice.

I assume you're going for A2 rather than full A? The XT660 is a valid A2 test bike but doesn't make enough power for a full A test.

Ahh nice 1 Rog,it never takes long for you to offer your invaluable advice with motorcycling 'Law' [I was hoping you'd appear hh!].....Yes sorry,it is the A2.. All insured [they did check!] and the van idea I hadn't considered:You don't mean actually riding it on to the pad do you,just out of the van and onto the test centre parking space where the test begins from ?

Yes.

Although you could park round the corner then push it in.

Or you could "park round the corner" then push it in, if you get me.

I'm not encouraging you to ride otherwise than in accordance, just noting that if your bike is on the MID (and you're not flaunting L plates on the way there or back) then you've very, very unlikely to be stopped.

If you have a mate with a full licence and comp insurance that allows them to ride other motorcycles. I'd suggest you get them to ride your bike there with you on the back.

You may even get volunteers on here if you ask nicely and post your general area. While they appear salty as fuck, the locals on this forum are actually quite helpful.

"Take the bus" would be as helpful if we were talking about how OP could get himself to the test centre.

Red dot on the map looks like it's just on the Saxon side of the Severn, somewhere middle of Wales area, Bewdley or Kidderminster ish maybe?

I would argue that on the road, it only matters what the police think/do, on the test pad it only matters what the examiner thinks.
What the schools trainers think is neither here nor there.

yes mate I agree,but should an instructor/school be giving that kind of advice?
the convo was I'd have to pay them for 3 days training [minimum rip-off...] but the other option
He said if you book a test yourself,you can ride to the test centre...I said was he sure about that as I'd not heard you could do that,he said yes ,you can...........

Unaccompanied? Either there was some misunderstanding, or they're rocking Teflonian levels of belief-over-information.

Don't take my word for it, read the law.

The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999 S16 wrote:
(7) The holder of a provisional licence authorising the driving of a motor bicycle other than a learner motor bicycle shall not drive such a vehicle otherwise than under the supervision of a certified direct access instructor (within the meaning of regulation 64(2)) who is—

(a) present with him on the road while riding another motor bicycle,
(b) able to communicate with him by means of a radio which is not hand-held while in operation,
(c) supervising only that person or only that person and another person who holds such a provisional licence, and

while he and the instructor are wearing apparel which is fluorescent or (during hours of darkness) is either fluorescent or luminous.

Not on the way to one. This isn't like VED and pre-booked MOTs.

As I definitely didn't PM, you can ride your luck and it'll almost certainly be fine if you're on the MID (how did you get insurance though?), but don't kid yourself that you're legal.
