Hello all

Just purchased an '09 GSX650F and have noticed that it has two brake reservoirs on each handlebar, are they both for the front? Also I can hear what sounds like liquid, or even gas, when using the front brakes and that the fluid level drops to the Low level on both.

Is this normal? Braking is fine and doesn't feel mushy or that they're ineffective either. What do people recommend?

Renz

Are you sure the one on the left isn't for a hydraulic clutch? The fluid level shouldn't drop that much when actuating the lever, although it will drop a bit as fluid is forced down the hose. Where does the fluid level normally sit?

Odd thing to say, Liquid sloshing about and gas being released from a small aperture have distinctly differing sounds.

From your description, I would say your forks are diving down, causing the fluid in the master cylinder to push away from the sight glass...
and also the petrol sloshing in the tank combined with your tank hissing to release pressure?

Thanks for the two speedy replies!

Just checked my manual, left resevoir is the clutch (which does move up/down when its engaged/disengaged but not by much) and the second on the right handlebar is definitely the front break reservoir.

The level drops to the LOWER level when I'm braking and then returns immediately to the upper level when I either release or come to a stop.

The sound I'd liken to fluid being pushed through a small space at pressure, which to me refers to the hydraulics being compressed when I operate the front brake.

What do we think?

Does it happen when you aren't actually riding but sqeezing the brake hard? I mean with the engine off and you standing beside the bike without the bike moving, just to be clear.

there are many fuckwits out there and, sadly, I imagine someone setting up some sort of frame holding their bike up whilst it's moving and they're hanging out of a car....

I know I'm gonna get bad karma here, but ''two brake reservoirs on each handlebar''? Who gave you the licence, do you have the licence and what was the exam like?! Shocked

Only when I'm braking, never if I'm just riding or sitting at a standstill.

then it's noise from the disc and pads. If it were escaping air or fluid it'll be doing it when the bike isn't moving.

Have you checked the meat on the pads? Maybe you are hearing metal on metal action.

Edit. You still haven't confirmed that it doen't happen when 1) you are not moving and 2) pull on the brake.

Your answer seems to be deliberately obtuse. Are you tritey?

Hey not sure who that fella is but apologies for the unclear answers.

The front brake pads are brand new, so that shouldn't be an issue I hope.

1) The level doesn't change when I'm not moving
2) The level does go down when I'm pull on the brake but only when moving

The fluid isn't going down, it's moving to the front of the calliper under inertia when you brake when moving. All the fluid is still there. It takes a brave man to watch the window on their brake calliper rather than the road whilst riding. I generally just rely on the feel of my brake lever to be confident in my brake.

What about your reported noise. Do you get it when the bike isn't moving and the brake is pulled in hard?

The noise is only there when I'm in motion and using the front brake. It sounds if I brake either lightly, feathered or hard. [/code]

It's clearly related to your discs and pads.

You are talking about buying a thousand cc triumph and say you have a couple of 600.

Maybe more time needed on a tiddler?

On the plus side, the thou may have a larger Master Cylinder/sight glass for him to stare at whilst he's controlling a motor vehicle.

Jesus, how do you look at your brake/clutch reservoir while on the move without crashing. Shocked

In 44 years of riding bikes I can say I only CONSCIOUSLY look at my brake fluid level when changing pads or bleeding the system.

Raise the front wheel and see if it still makes a noise when spun. New pads can make some fun funny noises. It doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with it to me to be honest.

Can I just say I'm not staring at the level when riding Rolling Eyes I just steal a quick glance every now and then and notice the fluid level dropping, far more than my last bike.

Perhaps you're right and it is just getting used to a new ride, certainly the system doesn't feel like it's running out of brakes!

Are you just hearing your petrol swooshing in the tank as it dips when you stop?

Definitely not a troll, if im asking a blindingly stupid question then please tell me.

The noise is only coming when I'm in motion and apply the front breaks.

Basically it sounds like this is perfectly normal and I shouldnt be worrying..?

So noise only happens when riding and applying the front brake, so forks compress, air escaping from forks or gaiters perhaps??

post a picture of the front brakes/forks etc...

The fork oil can and does make a "noise" when the forks are compressed/ less so when released, a bit like a hydraulic jack being let down. :karma:

It's disc noise. Bet a pound to a pinch of shit. Some disc/pad combinations are worse than others.

If your brakes work, they aren't glowing and your fluid level is still OK after you get back from a ride, stop worrying about it and go shag the wife or something more exciting than watching brake fluid levels. Thumbs Up

I'm convinced that his watching of brake fuild levels will suddenly get exciting, scary and painful within a few fractions of a second of each other....

Pretty much dude, if it was feeling odd during riding then that would be a different matter.

If it was something critical with your brakes, bearings, wheels or forks then I would hazard a guess you would be feeling something off too.

As Mr Bear says, stop worrying and go shag his wife.

Haha! Top quality, I'l stop worrying for the now then. Sorry if my line of questioning seemed amateurish; I barely noticed the level change on the gsx600f and as this is almost a totally new bike, I'm naturally picking up on the small things.
