Tracer 900 Vs Tiger 800 XRx

I am sorry for another Wot Byke M8 thread.

As you will all know, I have found myself in a situation where my bike is currently not very well.

I find myself now looking for a new bike. I did really love the tracer, and did loads of research before to decide I wanted one, but the one bike that was in the back of my mind was the Tiger 800 XRx.

So while I continue to do my own research, what are peoples thoughts?

I tried both and found the Tracer more fun. The triumph was not bad just a bit bland.

Being a Triumph aficionado, I would say the Tiger. But I am biased

Seriously though, both are good bikes, it's just the Triumph is gooder.

I found the Triumph tiger had brakes, sort of, twin piston sliding calipers will not feel like the 4 piston radial calipers of the tracer.

The bigger front wheel felt different too, not bad but takes a moment to get used to, neither bike is a slouch, a well ridden tiger 800 can run with a street triple 675 and be fun but the Tracer 900 can pop power wheelies and has a normal 17" front wheel.


You need to ride both, when I did I would have bought a Tracer there and then if they had a Lava Red in stock, but they didn't so I made a mistake and test rode a Multistrada, bought it, realized it was an unreliable POS, traded it in against the MT-10 which owns everything this side of a superduke 1290 On the road anyway, comfort is worth a lot on a longer ride.

If you can reach just beyond £9k then there are some used MT-10's appearing, Yamaha's price rises are keeping the used prices up.

OK Mr, chickenstrip, my two cents worth

I like the Tiger 800, it's a lovely bike but I don't think it's actually easy to compare with the Tracer. The 800 is a full blown adventure bike with an engine in a completely different state of tune from the Tracer. You are talking 70kw compared with 85kw and a much more relaxing ride.

Yamaha call the tracer a Sports Tourer, not an adventure bike because it hasn't any off road capability except maybe a rally field.

So it really depends on what you want, road bike or adventure bike.

The bike in Triumphs stable that is comparable to the Tracer is the Tiger sport, which although still keeping the Tiger name is pure road bike. It has 17" wheels, Radial brakes, etc. 2 grand more though.

But, back to the original question, which is better? That's a purely personal choice which in reality is based on which you like.

To me the Tiger because it's prettier and an adventure bike which I prefer. And it's a Triumph. If you are one of these who worry about resale, it will keep it's value more.

But I would buy neither because anything under 1000cc is for pussies

If pillion is a consideration the Tiger wins there IMO. Pegs are a little high on the Tracer. I'm really keen on a Tracer as my next bike but I'm really hoping the pegs aren't a problem for the mrs as it was one of the first things she commented on when sitting on one.

I've tried both and have owned my Tracer for over 2 years now, still can't find a fault with it. More than enough to keep me entertained

If they ever start complaining, take them for a ride on a sports bike.

On some of our longer group ride outs the women that go on the back of sports bikes are almost fighting each other to come on my bike on the way home.

I'm wanting to do some Euro trips two up so it's important that she's comfortable hence if it's a no go for her then I'll have to compromise. With any luck my CX500 will make a nice two up machine when it's on the road in a month or two but I have no idea what to expect from it's handling or reliability with it being so old.

Test ride a 990 SMT. Seriously. It's like a Tiger on mental roids. Smooth? No hell no. Batshit? Plenty. But it'll do the same job when you want to knuckle down - it'll just do it whilst simultaneously attempting to fucking murk you. It's fun.
