Advice required please guys!!!

Hi Guys,

Recent Hospital stay so head up my backside last couple of months anyway, my bike MOT, Tax and Insurance are now one week out of date! How do I stand regarding actually getting my bike for its MOT as I obviously cant Tax or Insure it without one?

Booked in at my local garage about 2 miles from my house on Monday by the way..

1st get insurance cover sorted, you don't need MOT or tax for that.

2nd get it MOT'd on Monday like you have planned.

3rd then you'll be able to tax it with the insurance and MOT in place.

By the book.

SORN it now (you are currently comitting an offence by having an untaxed, uninsured vehicle) then insure it, then take it for the MOT on Monday. Then tax it.

Make sure the MOT station has it booked in with your registration number and that you have their contact detaila. If you're stopped by the police on the way there, tell them you're on your way to a pre-arranged MOT test. There is a legal exemption from tax and MOT if you're going to a pre-arranged test.

You can take out an insurance policy without an MOT.

Thanks very much guys, Insurance just sorted MOT booked for Monday will tax immediately on receipt of MOT..

I've never been able to find a relevant gov.uk site stating it... but askthepolice does confirm you can drive / ride with no mot to a pre arranged appointment. 👍

Practically, if you're on your way to an MOT, no meat-copper is going to make an issue of it.

Technically, I'm still unable to find the exemption or defence.

I see cregT19 doesn't know either. Amazing how chippy folk get when long standing assumptions are challenged.

I've read every statute and SI that I can find on the subject and have yet to find an exemption from the requirement to have a valid MOT in order to drive to get an MOT.

That we can now renew it a month before it expires rather suggests the opposite.

As always, I'm keen to reduce my ignorance - I know this is boring to people who aren't so minded.
