Hi
So I now have another nail in my rear tyre this moning, 4 days after plugging the first, as it has nearly 3k on it and is starting to square off I dont know whether to buy a new one Dunlop Sportmax D222 160/60 ZR 17 M/C or get another tyre, can tyres be mixed?.
I use it for commuting so I would like something thats good in the wet and will not square off in 3-4k, the onle other tyre I have experiance with is the Pilot Streets. As my insurance is due as well next week I may be in the car till payday. Or should I just throw some tyre sealant in with it being a 2mm nail or staple.
Any recommendations please.
Thanks

I wouldn't mix tyres.

Now I don't know if that is just being stupid and you can mix tyres like you do on a car (or I do anyway, cheapest please) but I'm loath to experience a weave or wobble at silly speeds for the sake of £100 or so.

Certainly on your 500 I would expect well in excess of 3000 miles for a rear tyre.

How about Avon Storms or Pirelli road angel GT's. I had the old storms on my Busa and they were pretty good for touring, lots of motorway driving and lasted pretty well. Road angels have a good reputation as well.

I've done well with Pilot Road 2 and PR3 on the ZZR for commuting, mainly motorway

Hornet has Pirelli Diablos on which seem to be holding up well to commuting

If the pilot streets are 'pilot street radial' I tried those and they were dreadful. Wear rate was shocking as was rear hip in the wet. Went back to pilot road 4 and was more than happy to hand over the extra 100 quid a pair.

Avon Storm 2s are my current favourite tyre, good in the wet and last really really well. This means of course that Avon will bring out a new improved version that will be crap so get them whilst you can.

+1 for pilot road over street. Angel gt good, but expensivecompared to others. Bridgestone t30 or 023 have got me good mileage (upright commuting riding with a little fun).

How badly worn is the front? Can you just replace rear and get a pair next time?

I had a knobbly on the front and road tyre on the rear of my XR. It's one of the better handling bikes I've ridden Smile Part worn might be an option, got a virtually brand new tyre recently, seller should say whether it's been plugged etc.

Angel st, Thumbs Up D222 is oe fitment? Try nearest Honda dealer for a price? Remember to add fitting costs to online price. About 15 with valves and balancing per wheel is about average.

Stop riding in the chevrons and you'll get a lot less nails.

No chevrons m8, really is A & B roads from Ashton in Makerfield to Burscough, good news though Honda can get me the OEM tyres for £450 for the rear Shocked , yes thats what they just told me ffs, so i asked why fit tyres they cant replace at a normal cost?, no idea, but they can do the Angel ST for £170 a pair fitted to loose wheels or a Dunlop Sportsmart 2 Max for £120 fitted. Just a tad pissed off now.

Avon brought out a replacement for the Storm 2 ages ago - the Storm 3d -xm.

And it's a much better tyre.

As long as they aren't too close together I don't see why not.

I have been informed on the Honda 500 forums that

Dunlop D222 is made in Japan by Sumitomo rubber, dunlop parent company in Japan, supplied only to the factory as oem & not available in the market.
for replacement, the direct equivalent is dunlop roadsmart 2, made by dunlop America in Buffalo.

So I assume hope maybe that could be ok, not sure which way to go now Confused

Get one of whatever tyre you want to be using on the bike. As long as it's radial you'll be fine.

When the existing front wears out, get one to match it.

I can't see where the instadeath if you use mismatching tyres thing comes from. The front and rear are different sizes and profiles anyway. Often different compounds

Perhaps if you were pushing the bike to the raggedy edge, you'd start having problems. You're commuting on a commuting bike. The tyres will be fine.

I'd suggest Michelin PR4s

I'd go with the sportsmart 2 fitted for 120 a pair if you really don't want to plug it again. It'll cost you about that for a rear anyway. Also, apart from not riding on shitty parts of the road, do you go anywhere that has a propensity for nails/screws to be lying around? I stop using a garage that had a metalwork yard after getting 2 punctures in a week.

Same roads for 4 years, no puncture on CG for 2 years, 1 on CBR300 for 18 months, now 2 on this. I do come on an industrial estate but the first on this was near my house I heard the back making a tapping noise, must have been the nail being hammered in.

I managed to get a nail in the rear D222 about 200 miles after collecting my CBR500R. Replaced it with a Dunlop Roadsmart and all seems fine about 1000 miles later.

I got a nail in the rear on my grom. Tyre had done less than 30 miles. Upside was because they are teeny weeny wheels the price was also teeny weeny.

I have ridden on mis-matched tyres before with no problems but I was a new rider so probably wouldn't have really noticed anything weird happening. Now I tend to replace both at the same time with the same brand and type.

I've had those Metzeler Roadtecs. They're a very safe option, grippy in the wet, long life but obviously not so good for fast cornering and confidence.

I feel your pain with the nails, I had 4 screws in my tyres inside a year. That was from working in a busy industrial area, since changing job/place I've not had any (yet).

Dont panic Mr Mannering, second nail was only 3mm, got home flicked it out with a screwdriver while crossing fingers, this has brought to light how unprepared I am with no breakdown cover, so I have bought a stop and go plugging kit and a sticky string kit with some American camel strings, I just need a mini compressor now, all in about £40, better than £100+ to be taken home with a flat tyre. Will start saving for new tyres anyway.
