About half a year ago I got a Halversson jacket and Jofama trousers, I noticed they'd started letting water through so washed them with Nikwax tech wash and things have improved.

today however after taking the trousers off this morning they were a little clammy inside, but after having them hung up all day at work they were wet inside when I put them on - what gives?

Just need another round of washing and put some nikwax waterproofing stuff in with them this time?

Really? I thought those surgical gloves that the nice policemen wear while rummaging in your bottom were latex.

Perhaps we should ask Arcane to check when he has to see the nice man for a chat about perverting!

In terms of waterproofness, latex breaks down over a much shorter space of time than mylar. But as that's still measured in years, I reckon would be waterproof enough for Wonko. Thumbs Up

+5 for goretex. I was buying cheap ebay "waterproof" gear annually until I invested in a pair of Dainese full goretex trousers. 2 years plus last night and it's still holding up nicely.

Good deals can be had for discontinued ranges combined with sale prices. Got mine for £60 iirc.

Worth noting though, in the summer months they don't breath that well. So for me they're not best for daily use, you end up wet from sweat instead of rain.

Goretex and similar membranes do cool physics to let water vapour from the warm side pass through. If you hang kit up to dry without ensuring good airflow the inside gets moist.

I've never had a two piece membrane suit that didn't let some water in at the zips. The usual point of failure is for water to get channeled down the front of the jacket and then forced underneath and up the outside of my trousers soaking my shirt.

Decent bike gear in general has two protective layers. The outer generally cordura and an inner membrane.
The outer layer has a Durable waterproof repellent (DWR) coating which wears out. Most DWR coatings are fluoropolymer based and can't really be replaced outside of an industrial environment, about the best you can do is use something like Nikwax to replicate the coating.
Once the coating has worn out the outer fabric can become saturated with water which stops the membrane working.

In my experience even after using things like Nikwax you never seem to have the same level of waterproofness as when new EXCEPT with Goretex clothing.

I've tried the various reproofers such as Grangers, TX.direct spray, TX.direct wash in and found the wash in the only one that makes any difference. The other two just don't seem to work and are hard to apply. I've also used fabsil gold which is good but again not the easiest to apply and takes a few days to dry.

If you go to www.blacks.co.uk they often have the 1 litre sizes of Nikwax buy one get one free. Be carefull as its really buy one get the cheapest free so can take multiple orders delivered to store to get the biggest discount.

Bought goretex new and second hand off ebay. Jacket, trousers and gloves.

Washed second hand stuff with nikwax tech wash and tx direct wash in (£15 from tesco). Repeat the procedure every six months for both sets of gear. I am always dry no matter how shitty the weather.

Yeh, think I've not kept on top of the washing and TKwash in and that's the problem.

Halvarssons have a good reputation for being weather proof or so I hear and Jofama are one of their brands having the same waterproofing

Waterproof gear that get dirty can suck in water.
Road scum is a good sucker inner.

Armour out zips zipped velcro velced and fire it into the machine

with a measure of Nikwax.

Don't use normal detergent as that will damage the PTFE membrane.

Yeh, it's been through once with the jacket, going to give it a second go

Think the gloves might be beyond saving (Merlin) as I've dried them out a few times with a hairdryer so possibly damaged the lining

In decades of bike riding I've bought loads of 'waterproof' gear and found most 'water-resistant' and only waxed-cotton stuff 'proof', horrible but water-proof.

If it ain't Goretex it ain't waterproof.

Because Goretex has a lifetime warranty means if it leaks you can fix it for free.

Try this with Mylar Smile

Gore Rex is over-rated. I don't require my normal leathers or textile kit to be anything more than light shower-proof. If it rains heavily or there is lots of spray I pull a relatively cheap, lightweight, PVC or nylon over-jacket and trousers out from my rucksack or under-seat storage and they're just the job. They don't absorb water so they're dried with little more than a shake afterwards.

Gore Tex is under-rated. I require my normal kit to not oblige me to pull over and pull on an awkward, annoying combination of trouser and jacket over my boots and such.

I have a Rev It set with a separate goretex layer that zips inside the outer shell. It keeps me bone dry in the rain, but with it out in the summer the outer is light and breezy. It's only a pain in the arse when you get an occasional summer downpour and you're caught out without the goretex in.

I have never had a problem with Goretex (Or Shelltex).

Wax is Wank coz it pollutes anything it touches and goes hard as a hoowur's heart in the winter.

All larf if yer like but I am using the same old type of stuff wot I used when I was couriering years go. It is totally waterproof. It does make me sweat a bit but small price to pay for staying dry. Only problem is when it starts to rain it takes a few mins to put on. Worst case last year I was on a ride out with my local HOC on the rally, and I had to put it all on when everyone was waiting to go. It then chucked it down and I was nice and dry. Leggings £15-17. Overboots about a tenner.
