I always keep my foot under the gear shift but its a bit of a bitch doing lefts becaue my toes get scraped.

but

When I try and keep my foot ontop I always feel like I'm going to shift down by mistake.

Is there are right way or is it just personal preference?

I think I try and move my toes back onto the pegs.

That's just for normal riding. Are you meaning track days?

Haven't really thought about it, probably mess things up if I do Wink

Keep it below and it'll be far easier to break your toes on the ground imo. It would take a fair bit of effort to keep it below all the time on my bike anyway, it just wouldn't feel natural. If nothing else, I prefer to ride with the ball of my foot on the peg, and move forward to reach the brake or gear lever.

WOW, I was actually going to start this toic yesterday as I see most people have their feet below the lever, or pointing downwards.

I actually keep the ball of my feet(or toes basically) on the footpeg when riding my er5. Just seems a little more comfier that way and for the same reason as you, I don't scrape me feet!

I'm a 'toes on the tips of my pegs man' myself...

You've got a wide rev range so use it. I always try be in the right gear for the corner, toes on the pegs because...
1. Your toes don't scrap when you take the bend and
2. Your concentrating on the bend and not where your feet are...

Use the fulls rev's coming out the bend then change gear. I was bumping down a gear (and false grinding neutrals by accident) too much so I now ride on my toes. Thumbs Up

there is nothing worse than duck feet on a sportsbike, it looks ridiculous

toes on the footpegs please chaps

move and change as necessary

move and brake as necessary

then back to toes

anyway, since most of youare obsessed with gykd this is a good discipline to get into as it must be impossible (or at least very uncomfortable) with instep on the footrest

From the small amount of riding on a geared bike I have done I keep my feet under, lets hope it doesn't become a habit then. Confused

I do what Mr C does, toes on footpegs, toe down when cornernig is bad form (and scratches ya boots! Laughing ) but I struggle to keep my foot under the lever when I want to, i.e. when wheelying Mad I'm too used to keeping my toes on the pegs and just seem to do this all the time now. I never get my toe down (well, only time I ever got my toe down is when my knee/peg and exhaust was down) so do what Mr C says!

having your feet forward on the pegs is asking for trouble. imagine your toes catching the ground and your foot being pulled under the peg..snap crackle pop! If I were you I would get into the habit of riding with the balls of your feet on the pegs and move forward when you need to brake or change gear. This will be different in town etc and you would not be cranking the bike over. I think this is why race bikes shift down to go through the gears so the foot does not go under the lever.

Unless you're preparing for your test, of course. The IAM are currently making me ride with my feet forward because not covering the gears/ rear brake is a test fail. Riding on the balls of your feet is probably a habit to avoid until you have your full license in hand.

I don't like riding with my foot over the brake pedal, it's too easy to start dragging the rear brake without noticing. It might just be the way the pegs and pedals are arranged on my bike (quite high), but it just doesn't feel comfortable either.

you have a pedantic maniac for an instructor then I passed my Rospa test without a word regarding foot position

all that they ask is that you cover the rear brake for low speed manouevering

at all other times it's better to be away from the controls

I figure that if you hit a bump/slip/whatever it's better to accidently shift up than down.

Also positioning my foot above the gear lever, ignoring the fact you can't put any pressure on it means I have to contort my ankle.

I may now keep my toes on the pegs after reading this.

Instep on peg, feet sticking out to the sides. Never had any problems.

I have never heard of keeping your toes on the pegs before.
Will try it on the way home and see how it feels.
Before I asked this I looked at the other bikers foot position when going of at the lights and they always had the bask of the foot on the peg. Guess it's just lazy courier style.

Surely in an emergency situation though it would be better to be covering everything so you can drop down and rear break?

seconded

it's a bit different in town - I often keep the rear brake covered as it's safer to use in a slow moving situation

but I never, ever, ever, put my instep on the peg and dangle my toes it looks ridiculous, especially on a sportsbike

and anyone who does this and still has toes in their boots has chicken strips 2 inches wide as well

Riding duck-footed does look fucking awful. If you ride duck-footed get someone to take a photo for reference, or watch someone else do it... you'll soon change your technique.

I'm not going to change my riding style because of how I look. It's comfortable for me, and it's never caused any problems.

And 2" chicken strips are awkward to get on virtually square section tyres Smile

Anyone ever thought to adjust the brake and gear levers in to a position for safety and comfort? Wink
