Hi,

The bike is an SV650S. I'm looking for suggestions for a tank bag, as big as can reasonably be accommodated, and for a pack to strap onto the pillion seat. Ideally from people who've used the stuff suggested, not necessarily on the same type of bike of course.

Any recommendations? Cheap but not complete rubbish.

Thanks,

Tank bag - I used to have a GIVI like this:
https://www.icasque.co.uk/Motorcycle-Accessories/Motorcycle-and-Scooter-Luggage/Tank-Bags/easy-ea102b.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0-uu07bt1QIVCIGzCh1UWgmnEAQYBSABEgJtffD_BwE

It was excellent; pretty water tight without its cover, waterproof with it. Easy to attach, expandable for loads of lugging potential, clear top pouch. Cracking thing. Only got rid as no longer had a metal tanked bike.

For the rear, I'd suggest a Kreiga US20 or US30 depending on how much space you need. Easy to fit, easy to use, totally dry and reliable. It's not the cheapest, granted; neither is the tank bag, but you only buy this sort of stuff once and £150 isn't the end of the world for decent gear you don't have to cock around with.

I have used kriega bags and they are excellent but the op is after cheaper options.

https://www.lomo.co.uk/acatalog/Motorcycle-Motorbike-Dry-bags-Accessories.html

A couple of friends went round Europe using the 40l dry bags from there, niether leaked or ripped so they look well worth a try if you don't have more expensive kit already.

Givi.

Not cheap but not total gimp.

Easy to source.

+1 on Kriega. Last a lifetime and very ergonomic/functional.

https://www.motorcycleheaven.co.uk/bagster-tank-covers/easy-straps/easy-road-tank-bag-straps

Then any bagster / baglux tank bag, simply the best and plenty turn up on t' Bay.
Easily detachable and carry able, soft gear is easily nicked, don't ask how I know!
A rucksack on the back with a few elastic tie downs, once again... carry able!

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_cat/2091

I used the Q40 for a 4 night 1000 mile trip around France, was a bit of a squeeze but fitted everything I needed and very solidly attached with the built in straps & bungee hooks. Good value for money I reckon, seems solidly built and survived motorway speeds whilst fully loaded. Didn't get more than a bit of drizzle so can't verify the waterproofness but nothing a dry bag won't fix anyway.

I'd certainly recommend a Givi tankbag - I have one of the Tanklock range, which is great for easy-on easy-off

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look at the products recommended. The reason for wanting cheap(ish) stuff is that I'm not sure how often it will be used. At the moment I use a backpack, the of which is dictated by a laptop computer that I don't think will fit in either tank bag or tail pack. So the additional luggage will be for when I have to carry other stuff.

This is my cheap(er) touring set up for luggage,

https://puu.sh/xiDAy.jpg

Oxford 38 tank bag = 35£ ebay (torn rain cover)
hein gericke panniers = 25£ ebay (missing some straps for lower price)
My gym bag with 4-5 10/15L dry bags + tent + sleeping bag in dry bags.
Plus some big old back pack.

Can throw a big bag over the gym bag if its really raining lol.

Have a search around ebay though, a lot of kit that people want to get rid of for not much ponds.

Lidl periodically do tank bags. Can't fault them.

I have 3 tank bags I offered the forum - free, don't want or need them and can't be arsed putting them on ebay for a few quid.

Are you anywhere near me?

For pillion bags, any drybag style rolltop. I have a Held one, but lomo and oxford do similar.

Secure with ROK straps, part bungee, part adjustable nylon webbing, way better than pure bungee or traditional all-webbing cargo straps.

I'm in NE Scotland so not really, assuming that's you in the website in your signature. Pity because I'm looking for someone to do some boat gas work this winter.

Happy with my Lidl "B-Square" tank bag, until I got the new bike - the magnets fall directly over the rubber knee tank pads, so don't magnet Smile

yeah, I was going to say Oxford Aqua T30 tailpack

Oxford - their security products are distinctly lacking, but their luggage is good enough, IMO

That B-square one from yonks back was good. Before they went bust, for the (first?) time Heine Gericke had an identical one with a different branding on for three times the price.

I gave mine away after a few years abuse as it wouldn't fit on my Honda XR, BMW GS, or CRF250 as they all had plastic tanks.

Wolfman Enduro is silly money :-/

I'd definitely recommend you get givi luggage. I would go for second hand luggage as you can save a decent amount.

Older monokey systems tend to be what I have gone for.

I know it's not a tank bag, but I personally find soft luggage a hassle. Also my bike has paint rubbing where the previous owner didn't protect it when using soft panniers.

I would use that webbing stuff to protect your bike from the tank bag. When I used to use one, they would get bits of grit on the magnets.

Hope that helps.

I've got a "dynamic luggage" tank bag, the magnets are so strong they'd adhere through a sizable dog onto the tank...

as for tail pack, never seen one I thought would be worth paying for.

I always recommend LOMO dry bags... they make kayaking gear so it's sturdy and legitimately waterproof.
LOMO bags

Just noticed they now make a tank bag too, which I'd buy without any hesitation. but the normal dry bags on the tail with a bungee... job done

Mine was 15 quid off ebay. Straps around the seat. Perfectly fine for my needs, yesterday i carried 12 tins of soup and about 2kg of apples. It's waterproof enough but wouldn't stand up to a 3 hour monsoon. Whether you think this is rubbish will depend on what you use it for! I thought, bollox to paying 90 quid for a good one.

Can't find it now, will try later

Thanks all. I've decided to try and find a tank bag that can accommodate my work laptop (370x250mm). This will be moving the goalposts a little, but if I can ditch the backpack then it would be worth paying a bit more for the luggage.
