Hi guys,

Recently got my first bike (2011 Yamaha YBR125 Custom) and decided from the start that I wanted to learn to do my own basic servicing.

Got all geared up for the first oil change, it all went fine until it came time to tighten the sump plug back into place and I overestimated how tight it should be. After tightening it, it would continue to rotate clockwise and started leaking very small amounts of oil. I think I have stripped part of the aluminium drain pan threading as when I emptied the oil again to have a look I could see parts of the casing embedded into the bolt. I didn't realise I had to replace the crush washer and that was pretty wedged into the bolt head as well. Ive replaced the washer with a non crush one as suggested by a friend (another mistake?) and seems to slow the leak but its still there.

After doing a bit of research I have seen a few ideas but would really like help and opinions on this one. The plug is M12x1.5 i believe.

Could I use PTFE tape on the thread on the bolt?

Would a slightly over sized bolt and new crush washer work?

Would a longer bolt with the same size work?

Thanks in advance!!

Don't bodge it as it will only dump oil over your rear tyre and many kittens will die.

Either drill and tap/helicoil or hope that it's a bolted on sump and replace.

Well done, you've fucked the servicing stage and progressed in to the "essential repairs" stage Thumbs Up

But to be fair we've all cocked something up, its learning, good luck getting it sorted Very Happy
