How many on here still dabble with websites?
I aimed to get one done a long while ago but life gets in the way and i've realized it's not happening so I've saved up some pennies and this week have put an ad up on Freelancer.com where the bids are averaging £550; but haven't actually used it before and i'm not sure how confident I am about it all.
I wanted to check if anyone here would be interested in doing it?
I basically need something halfway between Gumtree and Ebay to start off with, including social media / payment options, also a separate area for advertising.
Other stuff will be needed eventually but for the moment getting it going is the biggest hurdle.
(I currently have no hosting or server options, have domains and emails).
Would rather do a deal with a BCFer than a randomer halfway across the world. ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done |

That price will be template customisation and ecommerce platform integration, custom builds will run a lot higher than that. Hopefully you can find someone decent ____________________ Observation is the greatest source of wisdom. |

£550 for something between ebay and gumtree? You have got to be joking?
You're going to get a piece of shit by some Indian web development company for that money.
I'll do you a logo for £550 |

I'd had a site half built once before, but the guy had other stuff on and it couldn't get finished.
Pretty much this template (which I was happy to start from):

No, I'm not joking with the price; that is just what was bid - but since I have no idea what the marketplace is like it's good to get this feedback.
So I need to go away and find 10K to get this off the ground? ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done |

If you already have an understanding of html, css & php, it's not too hard to figure out how to do your own custom WordPress theme.
I had to do it as the first big task at my job.
I hated them for it a bit.. but I learned loads. And it turns out it was actually really easy. WordPress has a fantastic community and.. that doodad.. database.. thing.. that contains information..
Yeah. Anyway. Have fun

Something between Gumtree/Autotrader/eBay? What kind of specification is that?
These are companies that spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pounds a year on internal software development, building, testing and compliance.
And you think someone is going to come along and do it for, comparatively, pennies?
Those people saying they fully understand your requirements will be taking your money, giving you hardly anything in return, and then ou'll never hear from them again. ____________________

| Don't recall putting that anywhere.

A full stack UK / London based developer? Either he's desperate for work or he one of those that sees your budget as a kind of 'starting price' and ends up quoting you 20 times that after trying to talk you around.
Riddle me this though, you just spent 10 - 25k on your site, now what? You expecting the users to flock in the masses? Or do you think that you can just do it over time more slowly? ... neither of those work. You'd want the same again on advertising.
If you want some actual practical advice though...
Specialise in a niche instead of trying to make the next ebay/gumtree. If you do well, you will be making money and can expand to other niches or larger areas.
You cannot and will not be able to make anything comparable without a very sizable investment as mentioned above.
| Will answer this in points;
1) I didn't know what to expect but he's put his own bid in there so..
2) Doesn't pay to assume the audience is there already, don't plan to spend a penny on marketing.
3) I do specialise in something of a niche, involving an audience built over a few years already. I've no need to expand beyond what the site will do, I have a day time company to run i'm very happy with.
4) I've found a theme I believe will do the job for now, it costs £50 for the year though I have no idea what i'm doing or what costs will crop up between now and when the site is usable. Time will tell.
Thank yous all for the replies. ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done |
