Went out for a ride with my wife as pillion last night before work (start at midnight). While I was stopping at a set of traffic lights on a hill the nipple broke off my front brake. Not a problem. Chucked the bike in gear (as a precaution) and used the rear brake until the lights changed, then carried on as normal.

I work about a mile from a bike shop, so after work this morning I pushed the bike to the bike shop. My brakes aren't that great at the best of times, so I pushed the bike along the road to the bake shop, to get the cable replaced.

About 75% of the way to the bike shop I was walking along the footpath when a lady in a 4x4 decided that she was going to turn into the driveway I happened to be walking past, without checking to see if there were any pedestrians on the footpath.

As some of you will know from experience, it's hard enough to avoid a car that hasn't seen you when you're riding a bike, but try leaning a bike to avoid an accident when you're pushing the damn thing! Shocked . I was standing on the left hand side of the bike at the time, so there was no way of stopping it in time, and she didn't stop. Somehow I managed to lean/pull the front of the bike around enough that she missed the bike (by inches)... She didn't even notice me, despite my swearing and the fact that I applied the horn like a pissed supporter at a rugby match.

... Now the thing is I know that car drivers find a moving bike hard to see, but if you can't see a stationary bike moving at 2 miles per hour how can you expect to be safe 1. As a pedestrian using the footpath? 2. as a motorcyclist on the road? If she'd hit me, what excuse could their possibly be? You can't blame the motorcyclist, trying to be a good citizen, not using his bike on the road when it is in an unroadworthy condition.

The good news is that it only cost 10 pounds to get the cable replaced (including labour), and now the brake is working much better than before. Much more powerful, and smoother to apply.

Simple fact is tho,the majority (75% or so) dont bother looking. Is life so crap that they really dont give a shit about anyone else?! Some women drivers are good,my Mum doesnt cut corners, always looks and looks again to make sure and also gets a bloody move on when pulling on!
