Hey,

Got the GPZ back today after sliding off on ice last week. It's had a full service too - took it to Southern Motorcycles (where I bought it from) in Bevois Vally, Southampton.

Engine seems to be running much better, its far quieter and more responsive but I've noticed the bars seem to wobble about a bit at around 30mph. It's quite disconcerting, and the wobble can become quite violent.

I'm not sure if this is a problem or something to get used to? I doubt its a warped disk, and the bars seem to be quite tight... so I suppose it could be wheel allignment - but surely this would have been checked during a service?

Does anyone have any suggestions/comments about this?

Cheers,

Craig

First thing I'd check is tyre pressures, then tread/tyre wear and shape etc... then check the bolts holding the bars are tight, check head bearings and all that.... can't think much else it'd be? Just hope it's tyre pressures Laughing

Hmm, sounds a bit odd, that the service didn't uncover this problem. There isn't any damage to your wheel, is there?

Poss wheel alignment after a drop, or maybe need rebalancing?
Check all of the other options as mentioned above.

Sorry, best I can offer

Exactly the same thing happened on my GPZ, when I let go of the bars they would wobble from side to side. I tried repeatdly to align the wheels, but that didn't seem to help....in the end it turned out that the rear wheel bearing was shot and the bars were a little bent from a crash I had...

If there is less than 2mm of tread left on the front tyre of a GPZ500s, they will feel twitchy on the steering. Just a feature of the bike.

I really hope its not that!

I'll check tyre pressures tmz morning when its cold - I was going to this morning. They havn't been checked by me since before I came off! Theres plenty of tread left too...

There's no visible damage to the wheel or the forks - I did think it could be a warped disc but its not affected by braking so I doubt it is that.

Will go grab a mate to help me check the bars are tight...

Cheers

What year GPZ is it?

As mine seems to do the exact same thing, it did it even before I had my "off" last december and it still seems to do it, nothing was picked up on my service by MMC yesterday either.

I have checked my tyre pressures and everything, and if its been serviced recently your head bearings will have been checked too.

Also what tyres are you running?

Is this not something to do with the 16 and 17" wheels? The latter being the much more stable?

It's a '96 Model. The rear tyre is a mitchellin, not sure about the front.

Was talking to the lighting guy, he suggested it could be something to do with the weighting on the wheels? I'll check that out when I have some free time!

I personally wouldn't put anything other than Bridgestone BT45 on a GPZ500s.

It might be wheel balancing's out due to one of the balancing weights having being knocked/fallen off the wheel.

I'd say rear wheel bearing as my FJ1200 developed a similar wobble/weave at speed (at the ton or so).

Also check the steering head bearings are at the correct torque settings as this can also cause weaving if too loose or too tight.
