With the intent of keeping start up costs low, until I have the position to buy some decent gear I've turned to eBay, I know I know.

Quick question... How do textiles size? Do they generally come up small? I ask as a lot of clothing seems to be L sizing plus. (I'd normally wear a 32 waist 34 leg)

Also what would normally be worn underneath?

How long is a piece of string? Every manufacturer fits slightly differently, there's no one size fits all approach to getting the right size kit.

As for what to wear under it, just your usual underwear under the trousers unless it's cold then a base layer and again just your usual tshirt under the jacket unless it's cold enough to need a base layer.

Buying online for textiles is a lottery unless you are buying a product you have previously tried on in a shop.

For a laugh I bought some cheap textile trousers online, I normally have XL regular so that's what I ordered.
What I bought were just fine but I can't wear thermal underwear. Normally when I buy from a shop I wear
thermals so I get the right size which is XL regular. Brands do vary and so does the inner lining.

The trousers I bought online were Buffalo for under £50...

Sounds like a failure of a plan before you've even invested a penny. You're willing to buy blind to: quality, size and protection offered all the while keeping in mind the purpose of the gear.. hmm. On the contrary, though, a helmet is the only legal requirement so whatever floats yer boat.

Buy cheap buy twice, rather just splash out on a singular item one by one as to build it up over time. You could just buy waterproof over layers -- so you don't get wet and therefore distracted -- to get you started.

What's your budget and what items of gear are you still to buy?

Different brands will be different sizes unfortunately.

You can either go to a shop and try clothing on so you know what size to buy or look on the net as some online retailers will have an accurate sizing chart, so you can just measure yourself and buy accordingly.

I often buy mid priced gear and spend some time trawling the interwebs to get the best price.

I wear a L in general clothes,but in my motorcycle gear,Ixon Brand,i need XL.So really you do need to try things on rather that buying your general clothing size.Same with my AGV helmet,its a size bigger than what i would normally wear in previous brands.

If you're buying used kit, ask the seller his measurements - height, weight, how long his arms are, inside leg, whatever, and how it fits him. That'll give you a pretty clear idea on fit.

When I started out I didn't have a clue about gear.

I bought a cheap (brand new) RST helmet £35?....second hand Daytona boots £30 (bloody bargain as they were great boots) ..a 2nd hand RST Jacket £25 ..Some new overtrousers £20 and a new pair of basic RST gloves £20....

That did me for a short while till I knew it was going to be a long term hobby and did me fine....no problems. But after a while you'll want to buy better quality gear and new, at which point you will probably habe a better idea what you need and will suit your circumstances best.

I know there's a lot of bad comments about ebay on here...but it's a good way of buying gear cheap and trying it out till you get a better idea what you want and have more money to buy new.

I've bought some stuff on ebay. some of it is a dud... some has been excellent

but you ought to really know that as a reasonable adult.

maybe the difference in cost of having to buy twice you might as well buy new from a shop?

maybe if it's just sizing, you can flog it on again and try a different size.
