New Battery Charger - very confused.... :-/

Hello, bit of insight needed...

I finally ordered a heated waistcoat and in anticipation of the thrashing it will give my electrical system, a battery charger as well.

The charger (Oxford Oximiser) is the kind that has a seperate connector for the battery so you can plug in when you park up in the garage every day. Now, according to my Haynes manual (for the Honda CB125T):

"If charging from an external source with the battery on the machine, disconnect the leads, or the rectifier will be damaged"

Does that mean my plan to top up my battery is going to involve removing all the leads from the battery every day? Why would it be designed in such a stupid way?

Also:

"Before charging check that the battery vent is clear or, where no vent is fitted, remove the combined vent/filler caps."

The battery has a clear plastic tube poking out one end that leads to nowhere. Is that the vent, or is a vent something else? I don't want the battery to burst all over my bike, nor do I want to have to take off bloody caps every day as well.

Any ideas?

Oximisers/Optimates are designed for charging the battery in-situ, no need to disconnect anything.

The plastic pipe is indeed the vent/overflow - it lets out the hydrogen given off by a working battery and will also direct any electrolyte away from anything important (if it's routed correctly) should the battery start to 'boil'.

take off either minus or plus and connect directly on the battery . mind the charge must not exceed 1/12 of the battery's capacity

Yes, fast chargers will frazzle your electrics when used with everything onnected. Not an issue with a smart mutlistage charger like the oximiser.

Just add a lead with the special connector to your battery, just tuck it into a fairing when not being used, and attach it as need be, no need to disconnect anything else.
