Not necessarily, although it is a lot easier and you can be a bit more thorough.

You can buy a little chain bath that sits round your chain while to turn the back wheel. It's got brushes inside so first you fill it with a degreaser to clean it then fill it with lube.
Saw it on here but can't find it now. Looked like a handy little gadget.

I dont have the problem of a dirty chain... Laughing
But I do have the problem of a rusty exhaust. And its in a similar place to a bike chain.

The first thing I do is put a big rag behind the pipe and over my rear wheel.
Then I Spray it allover with WD40. Get a brisely brush thing and get all the crap off. Buff it up and then give it another fine coat of WD. let it dry before I start it up tho. Laughing

One thing about WD 40, its notorious for getting things sticking to it. I used to use it lots, but then found that out and did some testing (went out on a clean bike, cleaned it again on the front then used WD40 and did same route. Was noticeable difference)

Useless but relavent fact the i dont know why my dads mate knows... but cocaine dealers are known for using it to lessen the amount that is consumed when selling it directly for use.

So while i agree its great at cleaning and does protect, it will make grit/dust an dirt stick to your exhaust alot quicker, same if you decide to use it on the front (where it is most obvious the effect it has).
