Derbi Terra 125 Oil in Air Box

So I bought a Derbi Terra in October last year and I've had small problems with it and 2 weeks ago it struggled starting it so I went to a garage and they told me that I would need a top end rebuild on the bike which would be around £600... so I said can you get the bike in a rideable state which they did. Replaced the spark plug, spark plug cap and the carb intake manifold? (not sure if that's correct or not, what it says on the invoice). So they fixed the problem with it not starting or cutting out when revving but told me to sell the bike or get the piston rings changed.

On the invoice it says "Air box filled with engine oil - indicates worn piston rings." After looking online I'm hard pressed on why it would cost £600 or so since the piston rings are quite cheap. So I've been meaning to call them back and get a quote of what it would cost as £600 doesn't seem reasonable. I was wondering if this is the normal price to get the rings changed? I'm not sure if any other work needs to be done he did mention something about the speedometer too but that's not really of bother to me.

Since I've been told about the oil in the airbox I've needed the bike to get to work since its 20 miles away but had no problems with it other than about 3 days ago where it went into 'limp' mode but after letting it sit for 5mins then idle for a couple of minutes it was fine. I've checked the airbox daily to every other day and there doesn't seem to be any oil leaking in or maybe the odd drip here an there although the 'oil' also seems to have a beige colour which is weird.

Any advice on what I should do would be great, I'm currently either going to get the bike repaired if its reasonable or use it until my next payday sell it an get a new bike but I don't know if it will even last until then.

It probably has a pipe that vents to the air box. My GSXR750Y used to get a small bit of oil in there every now and then.

Does it smoke a lot, does it use oil. If not, then you probably don't need piston rings.

Check the breather pipes aren't kinked or blocked.
