how annoying...

i bought a '89 FZR600 for £1395 last sunday, i picked it up on thursday (after clean, service check, MOT, and £250 alarm fitted). On friday, and saturday (went out with CLAUD14.7), i noticed the clutch slipping, and knocking from the chain (on closer inspection, the chain was wayyyyy to loose). and today, go out to use my bike... *sniff* *sniff* mmmm... the smell of petrol... look under my bike.... petrol stain on floor.

i had to goto work, so of i trot, doing about 30 mph, with a knackered chain, a slightly slipping clutch. get to work, turning petrol tap off.

*kinda works*

goto leave from work... petrol stain....

drive home... put bike on side stand, turn petrol off.... glove covered in petrol...
on close examination of the carbs, (looking through side of fairing) can see the petrol DRIP from the carbs, fuel pump. with the petrol off....



i will be returning the bike tomoro. but this has really, Pissed me off. i bought from a dealer, and when i test rided it... the chain didn't knock, the clutch didn't slip (tested both, at shop) and there wasn't an fuel stain on the floor... grrrr...

I bought a KDX125 which had aprently just been rebuilt a few years a go. It seized on the way home

My mate who is a mechanic rebuilt it properly with me and the guy i bought it off paid half Looked like his idea of a rebuild was a bit of wet and dry and a new piston

It sucks doesnt it. took ages to get mine rebuilt I wouldnt go throughh it again. If i was you I woul just get m money back. you dont know what else is wrong with it either

Thats bad news pal.

I've an '89 FZR and the main things it sufferes from is a noisy cambelt. (32500 miles). The rest of the stuff should be put right by the dealer. Dont take any shit from them whatsoever.

If a chain is adjusted properly is shouldn't need touching for 600 miles with alot of lubing.

Thing is, if he hasn't oiled the chain up properly and has been ragging it a fair bit then it is more than possible for the chain to work loose after only a few miles. Happened to the old chain on my storm, I rode it hard without any lube or cleaning for about a week and it was knickered at the end of it. Then I tightened it up, lubed it properly and it didn't need adjusting for ages. Out of interest how hard have you been riding it?

If you say the clutch was fine at the shop as well as the chain the by the sounds of it you've been ragging the shit out of it. (Not that that's a bad thing).

Just remember, old bikes (generally) need a /lot/ more work to keep them on the road than newer ones, obviously this depends on how you ride it, how many miles its done and the bike, just remember to keep on top of simple things like oiling the chain, keeping it tightened and making sure you haven't got lots of crud on your sprockets.

Also, D.I.D chains are they way to go. I've used them a few times and not had any problems.

If the shop had left it for months and the chain had gotten stiff and nasty, slightly siezed up and dried out, then it'd appear to tension up normally, but after a hundred miles or few it'd loosen up and get much longer.

It happened to me when I stupidly let the chain on mine sieze up; I realised after having thrashed it for a few 30-40 runs that the chain was smacking on the swingarm despite appearing to be tensioned properly to begin with.

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1981, motorbikes brought from a dealer must be in satisfactory condition and fit for the purpose, other than any faults pointed out to you before purchase.

If it breaks you're entitled to have the dealer repair them or you can ask for a refund.

So if they tell you it's "your" problem if the chain breaks after only 300 miles, say you'll sue them and report them to the local office of fair trading. That often does the trick!

Or, better still, get your money back and go somewhere else.

It is an FZR600, therefore the clutch is knackered! Seriously they are not tough clutches, and also have a habit of getting very grabby when they get got. The plus point being that they are very easy to change the plates on.

Check where the petrol leak is from. Could be from the fuel tap, pump, filter or one of the carbs. With mine it seems to loose a little petrol when parked (ie, you turn the ignition on and the pump always fires up, suspect it is evaporation and some dribbling into the inlets), so these days I tend to turn the petrol off about 100~200 yards before I stop, just to use up most of the petrol in the system.

As to the chain, I suspect it is nearing the end of its life if abuse over such a short time has killed it. However at that much for a 1989 FZR600 I would expect it to be very good. I paid £870 for my 1991 FZR600 which needed work.

the chain, they said was my fault (hammering 300+ miles in 4 days), but when the chain will need doing (service in 3 months) they'll replace it for free.... fair enough

the clutch wasn't slipping, just where it had been sat (apparenlty, but hasn't slipped since the weekend, so all is good)

cleaned it today. what's the best things to clean it with, for the fairing and stuff?

also... i cannot find anywhere, a double bubble screen for that model ('89 model) can only find '91 and up, has anyone stumbled across one?
