Just a reminder to SORN your old bikes.

I stopped riding my Mito in Nov last year and forgot to SORN the damn thing. Got a letter through the post and a £42.50 fine to pay. It's not the end of the world, but just a reminder so none of you get the same letter.

Don't quote me on this but i think there is a way you can get out of paying this due to part of an old bill that states fines not imposed by courts don't have to be paid or something, but i never heard the result of the case.

I just ignored my 'fine' letter (which if you read it carefully is not a fine but an agreement to settle out of court). They sent me another one after a couple of months doubling the demand. I binned this one also.

I have heard nothing since. I have had two bikes off the road but un SORNed for more than two years, I have had letters for both and ignored them. No further action has been taken.

If anyone has actually been prosecuted for not declaring SORN, I would be interested to hear about it. Far as I can tell, noone has, they are just counting on you to send them the money and if you don't, there are plenty more fish in the sea.

I have owned and untaxed un SORN bike for about a year, it is unused.

Before i bought it was unused and unSORN for another year, that makes 2 years of being untaxed and unSORN and neither me or the old owner who i know have recieved a letter.

CHECK YOUR V5s EVERYBODY!!!!

If your bike hasn't been taxed or SORNed for a while then you will probably not have received a new V5(c) version for it.

From the 1st July ALL old style V5s will be invalid ie your bike will no longer exist and you will probably lose the reg number.

Surely worth filling out one form just to keep the bike legit if you ever want to sell it or put it back on the road.

Of course this is their way of forcing us all to use SORN and will probably end up with a lot of older bikes simply 'falling' off their books Thumbs Down

Then of course there is the possibility that they might start charging us for our 'free' SORN declarations Tut Tut [/b]

I have loads of old style V5 documents, two of them are for vehicles that are still on the road, taxed etc. Do they just send you the new ones or what?

What about vehicles that have been off the road before there was a requirement to SORN them? Far as I know they still do not require a SORN, so they are just getting 'lost'?

I asked this a while back. Apparently new V5 documents are sent after you tax the bike. Will wait and see what happens when I do mine at the end of this month.

As for the other query if you get an answer let me know. I've an old moped in the shed and not sure where the V5 is Rolling Eyes.
So was wondering if I should get a new V5 (pay money Sad) and then declare SORN?

Tax, SORN, or change of details will all generate a new V5(c), so it might be worth either changing address, or you could paint the bike and notify them of a change of colour Wink

Bikes that have been off the road since before 1998 will still need one of these to be done to get a V5(c) otherwise I should imagine that they will disappear.

Of course this will then bring them back into the system and all of the requirement of the SORN system Thumbs Down

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't Sad

They've got us by the short and curlys, and I'd like to bet they will try to use this to screw even more money out of us.

Hhhmmm Thinking
Does this mean they'll be a market for untraceable bikes/cars?

Good question, yet another case of the government not thinking things through before jumping in with both feet to raise revenue.

The only people this will affect are the relatively honest ones.

How many of the hardcore tax evaders/criminals actually register vehicles in their own name anyway?? They'll simply keep on riding/driving untaxed, unMOTed, unregistered, uninsured bikes/cars just as they do now.

Meanwhile the DVLA will sting all those who are doing their best to remain legal, because they can't be 4rsed to go out and catch the real criminals who are the cause of the problems that they claim to be addressing, by taxing those who are easy to catch from the comfort of a computer screen.

On paper it might seem like a good idea, and politically it looks good to Joe Public, but in reality all it does is make things harder for honest people and does nothing to solve the real problem.

You should have got new ones when they were last taxed.

Still no requirement for SORN, but you still need to get a new log book. Not sure how to do this without paying £19 for a replacement or having to declare SORN.

More of a probability than a possibility (it is what the DVLA are currently trying to push through), added to which they are trying to make it an offence not to declare SORN for a vehicle that is not insured.

All the best

Keith

Unfortunately you're quite right, they will slip this in quietly unless plenty of people kick up a stink, the classic car clubs are trying to get a petition together to give to Tony Blair (as if he'll be worried about it), and MAG and the BMF have entered into the consultation process along with many others.

The consultation stage is now closed and no doubt they will still find that they have to introduce annual fees to boost their income, however they will still have to have another consultation to set the levels for these fees. Watch this space.

I spent about 4 hours last night turning the house upside down trying to find my log book so I could tax my bike. It had been sorned in the past but it must have been a while back. I couldn't remember getting a new style log book so I was getting a bit concerned, (a) coz I would have to fork out £19 for a duplicate log book and (b) I would have to wait for the new log book so I could tax my bike.
Finally found not 1, but 2 log books for the bike today. I dont know why I have 2,they are identical except for being a day apart on the issue date.
