Hey folks... I know the black forest is a favourite for a lot of you...
do you have any recommendations for frugal accommodation with decent bike parking? b&b/house for rent/decent little hotel... anything you've used and had a good experience really. just no tents. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

He said he was on the hunt for things to see
For me, it wasn't about that. As you say, it's more about riding great, empty roads. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I've been before... but we always use it as a fun detour for the roads en route to italy and don't really stop to look around
so make no mistake, it's for the roads... but it'd be nice if there was something cool to see/do during a break at lunch time or some such. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

I did a bit more than just the B500 when I went there, but didn't see a great deal of interest. Some good cafes etc; here and there a good view across the hills (and trees! ); bit of a ruined old abbey or some such glimpsed through...yes, you've got it, the trees! A very quick look on the internet didn't throw up anything that really grabbed my attention as something worth making a b-line for though. Maybe you can do better, or maybe your interests are different to mine. I wouldn't go back there for anything other than those roads, which I would like to explore further, just for sheer fun factor. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I tried a couple of routes off the ubiquitous 500, and it just seemed every route you took was good. Someone recommended to me a detour through Oppenau, so I did that, and it was indeed a good ride. Something like this:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/48.561118,8.2199028/48.5381685,8.1910113/48.4775852,8.1713544/48.4948657,8.2552289/@48.5147057,8.1696632,12.2z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0
I'd be happy to try any of the small, wiggly routes away from the main roads, as the surfaces were still very good. The only thing to be aware of, is that fuel is sometimes not available on these smaller roads, and I did get a little concerned at one point, but careful planning should avoid that. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I did a late afternoon ride around the northern part of the forest on a Sunday, and found petrol when I needed it, so it's not like they're all closed on a Sunday. It was on Monday, heading south, that I almost had a problem, but managed to find somewhere to fill up just as I began to get worried (Wolfach, that was). Both places were on main roads though. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
