If I want to get somewhere by the quickest route I use Google Maps, which is great.

If I want to take the long way home via some random twisty roads I use Calimoto, which is good most of the time.

Very occasionally, I want to define my own very specific route and follow it without an algorithm deciding that there's a better way. I'm looking for an app that allows me to create a route on my PC, then follow it using my phone. I know it is possible to export a kml from Google My Maps, change it into something else and import it into my phone, but frankly that's a bit of a faff and not always reliable.

Does anyone know of an easier way that just works?

you can create your own routes in google maps and save them under my maps

https://www.google.com/maps/d/

https://support.google.com/mymaps/answer/3502610?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

unless I'm missing something obvious, just use google maps?

Google Maps on the PC has a "send to phone" option. Create your route on the PC, dragging it about to follow whatever roads you want then send it to your phone.

This doesn't really work, because...

Google wrote:
Dragging does not affect sent route.

If you plan a route from A to B and drag the route to travel via C, when you send it to your phone it will ignore C and you'll just get the same fastest route from A to B that you started with. You could define the route using multiple destinations to include point C and then send it to your phone, but that would be a pain in the cock for more complex routes.

+1 for using My Maps - I don't know of a simpler way of doing it. Build the map on your PC and open it in the Google Maps app on your phone.

In other news, I use the motorcycle mode on Waze rather than Google Maps for day-to-day navigation. It's far better in my opinion, especially in cities.

Can you not just add a "travel via" or a few way points?

You can - it's easy to define a really complicated route in Google Maps on a PC. However, the "send directions to phone" just results in it reverting to the fastest A -> B route.

There are only two options I know of:

1) Define the route with multiple waypoints and then "send directions to phone" - although if you've got more than a couple of waypoints it's going to be a ballache, or;

2) Use the aforementioned "My Maps" in Google and open your newly-created map in the app on your phone.

as Loui5D says, myrouteapp now have there own navigation app, this will allow you to create a route, including way points etc that are then sent to the app to follow. it wont rewrite to use the quickest route either
