Hi All,
Purchased my first big bike recently - 97 Thundercat on 13k miles for a very decent price of £1400.
I am not very mechanically minded but I am quick to learn and do carry out research. I was happy to buy the bike with what I saw/felt but I would like to get it all checked over and a few questions answered.
I am located in Hayling, Portsmouth and wondered if anyone knew of of any workshop/garages that specialise in motorcycles? Better so, if anyone who knows their way around a bike could give me a hand and point me in the right direction beer money and a riding partner will be offered
Thanks |

2018-1997 = 21 years
13k miles / 21 years = 0.619 miles per year
619 miles a year is awfully low. Have you checked the M.O.T history to see if the mileage has dropped from high to low at one point? (indicating an engine change).
First thing i'd do is take it out on a long run and blast the engine free of the cobwebs (if it really has only done that mileage) in all gears to see how it performs.
Secondly perform an oil change, spark plugs, filter (air and engine) and take a look at the pad depth and ensure the pistons are moving freely. Oh, and the chain tension.
Look at the tyre date codes to see how old they are, what tread depth they have and if they're still round (as they should be). Valve clearance is the only other job that might pop up (check service history or yamaha guide as to when valves need doing for that model).
I think largely it comes across that you may have purchased a bike that, for at least one point in its life, has been stood for a period of time (parked up and left alone). No really biggy if it has, as I say, just look at the condition of the consumables.
