Pillion with L plates

Quick question. I have a restricted license (33bhp) I'm insured to ride bikes not owned by myself, and that i'm licensed to ride. Would I be breaking any laws to ride a friends scooter with L plates on? If that's legal, then can I carry a pillion while the scooter has L plates attatched? Would probably get pulled, but would it be an offence? Just interested.

I think it would be illegal for you to ride ot on your own with the L plates on to be honest. If you have a pillion it's deffinately illegal.

Can't you just take them off?

You would legally have to remove the L-plates, but other than that you should be ok.

At my local training school, if an instructor needs to take one of the 125s in the road, they put a cross of electrical tape from corner to corner on the L plate.

Technically you cannot ride a bike with L plates on (same for a full car licence holder driving a car fitted with L plates), but you are unlikely to get pulled for it. However carry a pillion and you are very likely to get pulled for it.

When I have ridden a bike with L plates on the motorway in the past I have done as mentioned above and used insulation tape to put a black cross over the L plate.

If you passed a 125cc bike test (not CBT) then you can carry a pillion on the scooter without 'L' plates, you must NOT display the plates............
If however you only have a CBT and a restricted provisional you CAN'T carry a pillion.

I'd just put black tape across the L plate.

Have to do the same when I drive a marked police vehicle at work, put black tape across the police stickers.

As I remember, displaying L-plates when you have a full licence for that category of vehicle is an offence that carries a fixed penalty fine of £40. Certain driving school vehicles are exempt from this.

I would go with the black PVC tape across the plate too.

The courtesy ped I got when my CBR was in for servicing had L plates.

I had my leathers on and looked like an utter dick.

Just checking Chris, you never know. Just interested for the future. Say I'm broke down and some guy with L plates pulls over to help. He can't offer me a lift because he can't take pillion, but he might offer to go pillion himself.

Never know. Just got me thinking the other night when we were sat outside cadets.
