Hi,

Quick question...what does everyone wear during the warm weather on their bikes to avoid sweating?

I'm currently wearing an Oxford textile jacket with matching similar brand trousers and am find myself rather damp around the legs by the time i get to work!

I have tried taking the liner out but the trousers have a shiney fabric on the inside so i'm just sticking to them and also making them smell pretty bad. I've also tried using jogging bottoms as a thiner liner, which is marginally better, but its still quite hot.

What are you all using?

I was going to try some knee pads and armoured shorts under normal jeans if that is good idea, while still have some protection?

Merino baselayers are the best I've found. Warm in winter, cool in summer. Normal ones work too but Merino is the best I've tried.

Next year I'm getting a more mesh based suit.

I find my kevlar jeans the coolest thing to wear when on the move on my bike as they are not windproof, so let the air pass through them

They aren't the best thing to be sat in 25 deg C office for 8 hours though being 3 layers thick

Mine are Akito District jeans, i bought them from my training school for about £100 and are fully lined

There is loads of choice around the £100 mark though

I think this prolonged heat wave is showing me that there's no ideal piece of kit in my collection simply because I'm wearing one, leaving it to vent and then swapping out for something else the next day.

Ideally the best piece of kit is the one that vents the most and keeps you cool on the move. Ankle boots, jeans, vented jacket and vented gloves is probably the best combination.

Regardless of if I wear jeans (Aramid; with armour etc) or textile trousers I arrive with warm legs. I just change into my things at work and take a towel with me for the really hot days, like yesterday.

Black absorbs heat, anything with a built in waterproof layer will be heavier and therefore hotter than non-waterproof items (such as jackets with a removable waterproof lining). Most vents on jackets, trousers etc are not direct (from front to back) so all you're really doing is letting air in with nowhere to go, worth keeping in mind on bottoms especially.

Shopping list: vented boots (RST Treachtech Evo II are £99 at J&S, vented, because the RST Trachtech Evo III's are out) so that you don't stink work out and get sweaty socks; vented gloves and some jeans (if you're on a budget just go into your local J&S and buy whatever you feel good with off the rack.

I have two pairs of Kevlar jeans, one pair "draggin" branded which don't come with extra pads, the knee is reinforced, you can't put pads in. One problem they are very hard and uncomfortable especially when walking.

The other pair RedRoute (oxford) are lighter weight jeans which can have extra hip and knee pads, very comfy.

Kevlar Jeans are not cheap, a decent pair from £80 and note that washing kevlar jeans have special instructions, cold wash and when hung to dry keep OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT..

For Jackets I have a Buffalo summer Jacket, sadly not waterproof but comes with a removable liner. I wear a very thin t-shirt so I do manage to keep cool.

I have a Weiss Air Spin jacket. It's as cool as wearing not a lot when you're moving, and not bad at all when stopped.

Kevlar Jeans also a staple at the moment.

Scott All Terrain jacket. Mesh lining, removable waterproof membrane
and plenty of ventilation. Around £200 in the fc-moto thanksgiving (black friday)
sale last year.

Crane kevlar jeans. €15 (~£13) from the reduced bin in Aldi.

Held Troy non-waterproof leather gloves. Lots of holes
for ventilation. ~£50

Wearing the wrong jacket can really spoil your summer riding.
My Alpinestars Andes jacket was bloody awful on a warm day.

I also have an expensive pair of Held Season Gore-TEX gloves
with special space-age magic materials to keep you cool in hot
weather and warm in winter. They don't live up to the makers claims.
I find they are hot and sticky in summer and not warm enough in
winter.

That's up to you. Regular jeans, heavy work jeans, Kevlar, leather.....
Find the best compromise between comfort and protection. A lot
of the sports bike riders around here are wearing shorts, t-shirt
and a pair of trainers in this weather.

If you're fat / it's hot - then you can't avoid sweating in proper gear.

I only find it a real issue when stopped for lights and my route to work and back varies depending how hot it is. In the current weather, it's the longer route but has less lights / traffic.

As above, Merino base layers do a good job and crucially don't smell / are easy to rinse out and dry at either end of the journey.

I still wear full length boots. If you do come off ( especially with hot slippy tarmac) the chain / sprocket isn't miraculously less sharp in summer.

Got mine from eBay. Not bad. Not very fashionable but does the job nicely.

My definition of short boots is shin length rather than calf length Wink - everything else is shoes!

Aye that's sensible i think. I can cope with a bit of heat and sweat for half an hour at a time. 3 months growing new bones / dealing with a skin graft after an an off with no protection - no thanks.

I think the more bike fit you are, the less you sweat anyway.

Really wish i had some hot weather gear, i was out on the bike doing some chores with my black textile ebay jacket (with inner liner removed) and the biker jeans with padding and kevlar lining in the important areas (ie not full linned) heck when at 60mph on the a47, i was still sweating there was no let up, the air itself normally balances it out when going that fast. But it just felt like i was being blasted with a 4kw blow heater.

The worst bits were when I was sitting at red lights in dereham, And i just cooked. Heck Even my engine was cooking my legs, Of course I have a radiator but i dont think it has any fan assist I was genuinely worried my engine was going to over heat. It hit about 35 in the sun yesterday here.

I dont have the money to get any new summer gear right now. So its going to be a for next year thing...

But im going to get one of those very airy jackets, and some better jeans... Maybe some smaller boots...

And yeah Im seeing loads of people out on their bike with a tshirt and shorts and sneakers... Just.... no... no nononoononononononononononooooooo nooooooooo! I tottally agree with the dress for the slide not for the ride mantra.

A few places are releasing single layer motorcycle jeans now with armalith etc woven inside the threads.

Rokker do a pair with a test slide time of >6secs and I think Resurgence have just released theirs with >10secs recorded, they don't come cheap though running around £300 a pair.

Like kgm says though, merino is top choice base layer in heat or cold.

Thanks for suggestions.

I had another trip home from work tonight and i felt like Ross from Friends in the leather pants episode by the end...had to be peeled out of my trousers.

So i've got hold of some Knox knee pads and will be buying their reinforced pants from sports bike shop when they get new stock in (plus normal jeans on top).

Hopefully that will help.

I've still got my Oxford Montreal jacket plus t shirt on the top...but will be resurecting a top box from my old scooter at the weekend rather than having a backpack building the heat up.

Will report back if that solved my probs... Smile

Most any base layer works. It depends on what. Omfort you need or can afford.
I prefer natural fabrics but microfiber is wearable.
I think silk is lightest for summer.
Berghaus (spelling) and that sort use microfiber which is comfortable enough.
I don't use Merino in summer it's too warm.
Good vented jackets are important.

Aye yeah, i use some of the Karimor breathable gear for underneith the coat from sportsdirect too.

Its just too warm in this weather.

Probably does'nt help i prefer the temp colder than most people at the best of times...e.g. office - i'll be the guy cranking the air con down to single figures.

I try to avoid textiles when its hot, just find them really clammy. I wear full leathers on my commute and don't really find myself getting too hot in traffic.
