Hi guys

Was riding back today in the rain and realized how crap my tyres are, back end slid out on me but managed to control it, got the stock sports tourers on my cbr f4i, think bt021? Anyway, want to put on some new tyres, from research thinking PR4s but open to suggestions, price isn't an issue. 90% of riding is london commuting year round, once in a while will get out onto a-roads etc, grip is most important to me

Cheers

PR3 or 4, BT023, Metzeler Roadtec Z8, all are very good. Or if you're on a budget then Conti Motion are excellent too.

Not surprised you slid in the rain because the roads are probably very greasy..

Sport-touring tyres are probably the best option.
Michelin PR4 are as good as any, but not necessarily
any better than similar ST tyres from Pirelli-Metzeler,
Bridgestone, Conti etc.....

They are all made from the same stuff, so you should get
similar performance from any of them.

I have used Michelin (PR3 and 4), Metzeler Z8, Pirelli
Diablo Strada (very cheap), Bridgestone BT023, Avon
Storm 3D and even the dreaded Maxxis tyres. All of
them have performed very well through the worst of Irish
weather.

I was beginning to think that all modern tyres were
quite good until I rode a new Honda NC750X with
Dunlop Trailmaster tyres. They really are crap in
the wet, almost as bad as the knobbly tyres on
trail bikes of the 1970s.

It is well-known that after a dry spell a drop of rain turns the crap that's come out of exhaust pipes/oily droplets/rubber debris/fuel detergent into a horribly sticky gunge that's also very slippery. Once there's been sufficient rain, this build-up is washed away. It's probably nothing to do with your tyres.

Actually, BT021s have a dreadful reputation for wet weather performance and erratic wear. They are truly craptastic bits of rubber.

Roads are well-known to be slippy when there's a drop of rain after a dry spell, aren't they.

PR4's are excellent in extreme wet or cold (doing 120 when -6c is not uncommon) and oil resistance. Ride through oil or disel makes no difference, plenty of grip.

Road5's should be the better, more expensive option, but I have not tried yet. It seems they are resistant to punctures as there are no part worns avilable.

Roadtec 01 are as good as pr4 in warm weather but I swapped one off when it got cold last year as the rear was moving about and had no confidence in it.

However since its a cbr6, suggest put a racetec on the front. Wet performance is also excellent and the profile make the bike much less boring. Track scrubs are usually 30 quid delivered and last 4k+ on the road. No good when it gets cold, below 5c. Im commuting 13k per year and get through two of these in the warm months, then back to pr4 for winter.

Yes of course, all of the shite that's been deposited gets lifted out of the surface. Add craptastic BT021s to the mix and well... Laughing

PR4s are great in the wet. I was going to go for a road 5 this time but they haven't released the right size one for my bike yet so I've gone for another PR4GT.

A mates just back from touring the alps for a fortnight on his Tiger sport, doing as many passes as he could fit in. He put road 5s on and rates them highly.

I got 6.5k out of a pair of m7rrs - could've maybe just about almost nearly run them to 7.5k and they'd still have been passable RE the letter of the law. But my bike feels bloody awful if I wear that much rubber away. Ride quality suffers hugely.

The Metzeler m7rr's are great, however i only got 3.5-4k out of my rear. I would happily use them all year round.

Yes I think they would be fine on damp roads - I only got to try them on wet surfaces two days ago when the heatwave broke with a torrential downpour. The roads were actually foaming white (with what I assume was some sort of accumulated traces of detergent from oil and fuel). And so it all looked quite treacherous - but the m7 tyres didn't seem troubled by it. That said, there was a massive amount of fresh water around, and this always helps - providing it's not so deep that you're actually aquaplaning, of course. The water washes the surface and so can be quite grippy, weirdly.

As for my comparatively high mileages on the m7s, I think a lot of that is down to how slowly I pull away from standing. Some (most?) riders might feel like this is to miss out on a fun part of riding - and I get that. A good launch is almost a thing of beauty. I just can't quite afford it. ; - )

I know the BT021s don't have the best reputation, and the only time I've tried them was an 021 on the rear, with an 020 up the front, I'd probably just leave them on for now and ride accordingly until you've got a fair chunk of use out of them.

Last time I got tyres, I went with pilot road 2s as they were cheaper than the newer models.

This was well over a year ago though, and I'm not certain they still make the 2s. If not, I'd just suggest going with the previous model, or the current model if you're wanting to spend a bit more.

If pilot road 2s are still available, then I'd be checking the date codes and considering what milage you're doing to decide if you'll wear through them at fast enough rate.

The M7Rs are excellent tyres too but they square off quicker than the PR4s. The PR4 seem to retain reasonable handling right down to the point they need replacing.

I also had an experience with the M7R where they went from legal (admittedly only just above the wear bar) to showing canvas in under 200 miles. I was kicking its arse in but still.

Did a similar run at similar intensity on the PR4 last weekend and it's STILL marginally off the wear bar.

I also find the front PR4, possibly due to having those little slits around it, feathers much less markedly than any other tyre I've used.

I've been really impressed with the Avons fitted to my superduke gt, even in the wet they have only slipped when i get a bit trigger happy on the throttle, thats on the 3D Ultra Sport, a friend runs the storm 3d XM on his hyabusa and loves them.

For the price they're excellent. Michelin road 5's are brilliant but expensive in comparison.

thanks for all the feedback guys, can confirm that indeed the roads were "foaming" so I did take it easy but the back did still manage to slide out on me a bit on a straight taking it easy, went back home to research tyres and plugged in the BT021s and noticed the many crap reviews, good to see many are recommending the PR4s as a local place has them and can fit them quickly, think I will switch over.

@kramdra - what is this racetec you are speaking about putting on the front and track scrubs? sorry relatively new to big bikes as have rode 125s for years

Avons aren't liked on this forum, so only a few of us recommend them. Everyone who tries them on here seems to like them though, the rest just go with the expensive option.

Just had a set turn up today to be fitted to the 59 plate Deauville for £160. They are incredibly cheap and no worse than anything else.

I will praise Avon ultra storm II or some other combination of those words. Had them for about 25 thousand miles on the old ZZR6. They seem to last ages and always performed brilliantly in all weather commuting. Whether these are still about or been updated I don't know, my bike is now gone. Need a new one.

https://www.metzeler.com/site/uk/mobile/products/tyres-catalogue/Racetec-RR.html

Usually expensive. Track scrub fronts are usually about 30 quid delivered and have full tread depth in the areas you will use them on the road. Good profile makes a boring cbr6 more agile. 4k miles of motorway and twisty commuting with the softest, stickest tire I can buy.

Supacorsa are another option but in my opinion less good.

Watch a wet irish road race where they are using these. You will not have any problem in the wet.

Racers vs average rider. Water cools the tyres quickly so unless you are fucking rapid, you'll lose all the heat and they'll become troublesome.

I'd advise against everything he has written ^^^

Then again, I'm not a peasant on a budget and have to buy part worns.

I have a pair of Avon Storm 3D XM on my old ZZR11. They are
at least as good as any of the other ST tyres I have used over
the last few years. Excellent grip in wet or dry conditions.
6140 miles so far and plenty of tread remaining.

The latest from Avon is the Spirit ST. I'm happy to stick with the old 3D XM
for as long as Avon continue to make them. The newer tyre is a fair bit more
expensive and I don't see them beating the price/performance ratio of the 3D XM.

BTW, they are still made in Melksham, at a time when many
of the top European brands are now made in China.
