I'm used to running car tyres to the end of their lives but bikes is a different matter. Went for a ride out yesterday not a massive one, tyres looked fine before i went.

Took the bike out this morning and first thing i noticed was down the middle about an inch wide covering probably 70% circumference was like patches of tread missing (almost like a layer of tread).

Do they just go all of a sudden? (im pretty sure these are shot now right?)

Battlax i think

I s'pose it's because they're accurately made. Tread compound is black and opaque. If they're very close to wearing through to the carcassing then there may only be a very small amount of rubber left over it concealing the carcass. You might not see worn areas easily if you're not looking for them, due to where the wheel comes to a rest. If there's no central groove you won't know how much rubber is left over the carcassing unlike on a car tyre (where the legal limits are also different).

Yep. It seems to be more of a thing these days - it's happened to me twice. Keep an eye on the wear indicators and as soon as the tyre is down to those, get it replaced even if the tread looks adequate. There will be a marker ("twi") on the edge of the tyre to tell you where they are.

Yes, I've had one go from just over the wear bars to canvas showing in 200 miles. That was am M7RR.

Admittedly 200 miles of high speed on dry, high wear roads.

"looked fine" as in had more than legal minimum tread remaining?

They wear down gradually. Check pressure, tread depth and condition
regularly and you won't get too many surprises.

Some rear tyres don't have any tread pattern at the centre-line.
This means the wear indicators may be well off-centre.
My rear Metzeler Z8 was worn down to the carcass well before
it reached the tread wear indicators.
