as above really, rewound my stator a while back, checked up on it today and as i though the electrical tape i'd used had gone all brittle and crackly. i need to insulate the three phase wires where they join the regulator wires by spade connectors.

would self amal tape be best for this or would heat shrink (provided i can find some big enough) be better?

Glue lined heat shrink would be best. Thumbs Up

I bought some silicone self-amalgamating tape a month or so ago. I'm impressed.

"heat-resistant temperature range from - 50 ~ 260 degrees, emergency temperature 300 degrees. Heat stability 200 degrees, long-term application at this temperature, the application of product safety for more than 10 years has excellent anti-aging properties. Anti-stain, hydrochloric acid, UV, anti ozone, cold, heat, high pressure and so on"

I am not sure though that all self-amalgamating tape is silicone (based?).

You can get it cheap but slow: https://bit.ly/2wsn8NZ https://bit.ly/2PH33Mw

Or quicker but dearer here (maybe from the same place...).

I think some self amalgamation tape still uses an adhesive. I would consider the adhesive may dissolve in contact with oil.

We use heat shrink in 6“ dia sizes. So it is possible to get in any size almost. Ebay will have then you need to buy 600' of it for 4“. Very Happy

Either thing would probably work well.

The silicone self-amalgamating stuff I bought is very odd. Not at all sticky to touch, but when it's in contact with itself, you've got a few seconds to undo the join if you want to move the tape, else it's one piece of stuff. I've used it in place of cloth or PVC tape to bind wires together in parts of wiring looms which you can't slide shrink-wrap onto.

Cheers all, ended up using both - heat shrink on the connectors to keep them in place, and silicone tape to protect the exposed enameled wire. Thumbs Up

Bought the tape twice though - first lot from screwfix was "rubber" tape only good for 90C Embarassed

Bought the proper silicone stuff from halfords Thumbs Up

Late to the game but they usually use plain PVC sleeving in that application (covering the exposed ends of the stator windings).

ah well, ill look for some next time. to be honest with my birds nest of wiring and tape, dont know how long itll last Laughing

also replaced a shitty rusty relay for the hid system (installed by previous owner) that started to smoke when i connected a properly working charging system Shocked i suspect this may have been a cause of the initial issue. shame really, the rest of his wiring is done very well from what i can see.

A job is not done right unless it has had twice the expenditure than really necessary laid out for it. Embarassed

well, i broke down today and had to push it a mile ish home Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh!

turns out a sharp edge poked trough the heat shrink on one of my connectors and shorted on the frame. first indication was when i started it in town and it chugged over rather than its usual whizz.

this progesssed into lights turning off, then a check engine light, then dash turning off entirely, then misfiring, then when i was almost home, i let the revs drop when when slowing for a turn and it stopped Sad

anyway, found the short and re- insulated the lot, this time with some fabric-ey tube stuff similar to what was used on the origional stator.

How did a repair you made inside the engine short out on the frame?

The fabric was possibly fibreglass, looks woven/braided.

Or higher tech stuff.
