Hi,
The guy over the street from me has had a 2001 NSR for about a yr, an i recently noticed that he aint been ridin it much lately. Yesterday i found out why! A big red machine pulled up on his drive, and before seeing it only the rattle of dry clutch plates and the lumpy thumping engine sound gave the game away. Yes he only gone and got himself a Duke of all things! cant tell if its a 748 or 996 tho, not that it really matters much, and no way am i feelin even slightly jealous, much!
Nice steady progression!

It is quite a jump. Although if it is a 748, its not much different to going to a 600cc 4 cyl

Well...seeing as he's already been riding for a year, I don't see what the fuss is about Confused Loads of DAS people jump straight onto sports 600s (or higher) as soon as they pass their tests, so I'd say that this guy will probably be a heck of a lot safer...

As long as he's sensible enough to learn to use the power first, I don't see the problem.

Yep doesn't sound like a big jump to me, like Tin says most ppl 21 and over do DAS and jump straight on a 600 or bigger, that's scary.

Although I take it he doesn't rely on his bike as transport, if he does he didn't learn anything this past year if he went and bought a Ducati Smile

The probability is, that ifd he's got a newish ducati then 'posing' is gonna factor into the situation a fair bit (just on the basis that if he can afford one and hasn't had any other bikes then it's probably partly the looks/street cred etc)

As far as riding it goes he should be fine providing he's sensible.... I think the main problems come when someone's been ragging a 125 everywhere, then decides to try ragging a big bike everywhere.

Hey i have to agree with G, i think that pose value has alot to do with why he's gone for a Duke, as with that money you can buy alot of machines. Actually he does use it for work er i think anyway, as he pulls up o/s his house with a rucksac at about 5ish in the evening. He used the NSR for work 2. he seems a sensible sort of bloke tho, and i never seen him canning his NSR, but that might be because he never bothered 2 de-restrict it even after passin test! Dunno about insurance but he's about 26-27 i reckon, an i knw its a 51 reg, with a loud alarm fitted! Dunno if he'll be using it in the crap wether as much as the NSR, as he has a car as well. Seems like he has passed the little honda to his brov now as i saw a kid wearing a tracksuit and trainers zipping off on it.
Anyway arnt newer Dukes supposed to be reliable? Theres also a guy in my town runs a printing shop and he comes to work on his colour matched yellow 996, sumtimes in the rain. Wonder if havin a yellow duke o/s your yellow shop sells more printing?

Ahhhh, I'd say - that's a huge jump - but it's only because I'm jealous!

At the end of the day, if he crashes it by riding carelessly, he'll be loosing out far far more than anyone else (the cost of repairing one of those beasts must be phenominal).

Guess thats probably true. Although if someone does rag a 125 everywhere, chances are they will have a fair bit of 'skill' in there somewhere. It's just the confidence thing that will get them in the end Confused

The newer Ducatis should be more reliable, but their faults usually develop from their integral design "faults", rather than pure engineering deficiencies...the battery and terminals are frighteningly exposed, and the electrics can be generally dodgy.

Also, Ducatis (well, the pre-2000 ones at least) are notorious for being "unique", i.e. each one is built with whatever components happened to be lying around the shop floor at the time...so consistency is/was a problem too.
