As the nights are drawing in and the morning will soon be dark I see more people filtering with their hazards on.

This is something I very rarely do, on the motorway I can see some benefit to it but when driving round town my personal opinion is it makes you look like a tit.

In the interests of science I did try enabling the hazards on my commute (the motorway part) on yesterday's drizzly monday morning. It did "feel" like people noticed me more and more cars made space.

I still don't think it's something I will be doing very often but I wondered what others view on this were.

My bike doesn't even have hazard lights, so that's a no from me

The big blue trike has got 'em, but it tends to get stuck when filtering.

I have never thought about or seen anyone using hazard lamps when filtering.

Absolutely not, they do nothing useful in terms of warning people in front and are an annoying distraction for any following biker, especially in the wet.

I always assume that anyone filtering with hazards on isn't capable of thinking properly and needs them as some sort of comfort cushion, as if they act like a safety-forcefield. I give them a wide berth.

Personally I think hazards for filtering would confuse motorists even more.

I think this is a habit from across the pond.

I was in Paris recently in a LWB van and every single bike and scooter had their hazards on whilst filtering.

First time I’ve seen it.

But I have to give credit to the guys filtering through tiny gaps on goldwings

The only things that should use hazard lights whilst driving are vehicles being towed on the motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway or if you are on a mobility scooters etc on a dual carriageway.

Your hazard lights are to alert people to a hazard/ obstruction caused by your vehicle whilst you are stationary and should not be on whilst driving or parking ilegally.

It is acceptable though to switch on your hazards if you encounter an objector/situation ahead that may be out of view of the following traffic so as to bring it to their attention, but once the hazard is past or you are sure the vehicle behind has notices the hazard you should turn them back off.

Riding with them on unnecessarily would just cause a distraction and I would imagine you could get done for driving without due care or something if you leave them on?





The new trend for flashing brake lights gets on my tits too, the rules for them are supposed to be that they work independently of other controls under hard braking but the after market ones come on EVERY time the brake is pressed.

They are supposed to only come on if the vehicle brakes hard for an emergency stop type situation which would require a brake switch that operated later in the pedal throw or some sort of inertia switch.

The ones that strobe/flash on every press should not be able to pass an mot imo.

It doesn't really do much though does it? Seems fucking pointless and whenever I see someone doing it I throw up a bit inside my helmet.

Only time I ever used hazards is when a mate lowsided in front of me in the lanes, when there was a sea of gravel completely caking all three lanes across a section of the A41, and when I rode my flat rear tyre at <20mph to a bike shop about a mile away.
