My headlight was gone, revcounter not indicating anything for me and now viewing the above thread and actually checking the reg rec that seems to be the reason. I've already bought a new reg rec a cheap one from Germany for about thirty quid cos an OEM is £131 pounds.

For some reason Kawasaki decided that the er5 would run a 9 volt (or so) ignition system.

When the reg/rec goes it burns out the resistor in the ignition switch, the tacho and then the CDI so whenever I see a tacho not working on one of these I always check the reg/rec output.


1) So assuming the resistor has been killed too- do I need to change the whole ignition
2) I am not willing to spend eighty quid on a bloody tacho. Recommendations please- this was supposed to be some cheap work commuter but this one issue is causing me big losses already.
3) Where do I get a new CDI?
4) Is there anything else it kills?
5) If the reg rec dies again I can't be buying all the above again- surely there is a prevention to all this.

There's some info on repairing the rev counter in the thread you linked to.
As for preventative measures for the future... fit a Voltmeter.
I did that with mine a few years ago when my reg/rec started playing up.

As for a preventive measure, clean the contacts of your charging system, oxidation is what kills it. Thumbs Up

The only electronic store I knew where you could walk in and
buy small electrical components like resistors and diodes was Maplins which is now closed down. Where can I buy electrical components without ordering online (takes too long)

I'll have a look at that thread. Got a link to a voltmeter you have in mind and an installation guide? Where exactly would the voltmeter go?

You mean all the ends of the wires on the reg rec, the yellow alternator wires and the battery terminals?

As my ER5 is the A1 model, it doesn't have a fuel gauge so I fitted it between the tacho and the speedo. (and wired it to a 12v feed inside the clocks - live feed to the tacho if I remember rightly).

As for the wires to keep clean etc : Behind the RH side panel you'll see where the reg/rec plugs into the loom, make sure the contacts are good and clean and coated with dielectric grease.
