Hi,
Are you allowed to ride with sunglasses or not?

I believe you are, would it be classed under the same rule as visor inserts which are also legal?

Living on the West coast means most of my rides aer to the East in the mornings and to the Wes returning in the evenings so the bloody sun is always in my eyes. I find sunglasses the best way to go coz you can take them with you when you get to where your going. I seem to remember that theres a loophole in the law that allows you to wear darker sunglasses than you are allowed tinted visors.
Stand to be corrected though.

Some visor inserts are now illegal due to the amount of light they let through. Sunglasses are legal but can make a mess of your face in a crash. Buy a tinted visor. Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up you are correct, although I wouldn't call it a loophole, just an omission.

The difference is that if you need to wear glasses, then you can get tinted or photochromic made to your perscription. As you need these to ride then they're legal to wear. As these are legal then normal (non-perscription) sunglasses are also legal.

However, I've read about people wearing glasses been concerned about what would happen in a crash. Having said that I've not heard of anyone being serious injured, but willing to be corrected on that.

Remember the important thing about wearing sunglasses on a bike is not to do an impersonation of Arnie in Terminator or think you're in an Easy Rider movie Thumbs Up Wink Very Happy

Just use a black visor. I have for over 10years with no problems with the law. I also carry a clear one on longer trips that may be hampered by a night time return journey or rain (not as many take their bike out if there is a coud in the sky...you know who you are!).

But don't take the piss, I have seen loads of bikers riding at dusk with their fancy iridium/black visor down, they are just asking to be pulled.

I have been pulled for "random spot check sir" loads of times with the visor and only had one mention it. He asked how dark is my view out of the helmet, so i whipped the visor off so he could look through it. He was amazed how light everything was.

As I remember the rules apply to your "primary eye protection". So If you have a clear visor fitted, sunglasses are no problem. If you have an open faced helmet, they are technically not legal...unless you have goggles.

The wonderful world of British law.

I couldn't be arsed with changing visors all the time if I was to use a tinted visor. As I wear glasses or contact lenses anyway, wearing sunglasses makes little difference to my comfort etc.

As for injuries as a result of wearing glasses/ sunglasses, that's laughable. Sunglasses are entirely legal and are more convenient than changing tinted visors. Having said that, you are likely to lose some peripheral vision if the frame is in the way, but that's little different from wearing normal glasses which don't cover your entire field of vision.

Personally i use a tint insert for my visor. This provides me with the protection form the sun and should i get a pulled by a stressy copper it can be pulled out with no hassle.

Sunnies are great for the beautiful british summer weather. You can never tell whether it will snow, hail or even shine all day long.
People may say that sunnies cut off some of your peripheral vison, so what exactly do they think a flip down sun screen in a car does to your vision.

All in all as long as you can see where you're going we should be able to use what we want.

It's injuries that result from crashing whilst wearing sunglasses then the frame injuring your face/eyes that are the problem rather than the wearing of sunglasses causing crashes.

T.C. said he saw 200 injuries a year caused by sunglasses after crashing and a few deaths.

I've prescription sunglasses, so swap between them and my normal glasses. Couldn't be arsed with swapping visors, they don't fit in my pocket.

the bike laws may have changed when the car laws on tints changed in dec 03. Their's bound to be a website/source that states the exact law as it stands now.

i've bought goggles to use when I get my bike (tinted goggles). They look well cool as well Cool

i wear sunglasses, people think im doing it to look cool, not sure why Razz
But the downside to my glasses is they are of the "wrap round" sort and stoping and breathing makes them steam up Sad its ok when your going as the cool air de-mists them.

must admit tho, i do look cool Very Happy

Steve.

Consider me corrected. Smile

I'm screwed either way then, if I'm wearing contacts and it's sunny I get injured from sunglasses, if I'm wearing glasses I get injured from those. Oh well. Laughing It's hardly something which keeps me awake at night, unlike playing with CAD applications which make m think I really need to update my computer. (And I thought some of the computers in the labs were slow... Shocked )

Never rode w/ sunglasses, but I'm certain it's perfectly legal as most coppers still wear the same 'Chips'-style sunglasses they had in the '60s. And thank God for that.

Got two dark smoke visors on order, due to be delivered on Friday evening. Hoping those'll be a little more durable than the piece-of-crap iridium visor I bought a couple months back...

Dont think there is a problem wearing sunglasses, as has been said before, many people wear prescription glasses anyway.

You just have to remember to take them off before you take your helmet off because it can really hurt when you try to yank your helmet off and they scrape the skin off the bridge of your nose (and unfortunately I have done this many times, not pleasant) Embarassed
