Hi all,

Have a bit've a strange issue.
Recently bought an 09 Fz6-SHG that the previous owner had done a naked conversion on.
As well as the conversion, he added LED indicators.

I bought an LED flash relay and installed it and thought great! problem solved. Problem not solved.

The indicators blink at the correct speed when the engine is off or idling but as soon as the revs go up, the speed of the blinks increase as well.

Before and after the new flash relay was installed there was also the issue of the indicator LED's on the display being lit when the indicators weren't on. When the indicators are turned on, both display LED's get lit up, one brighter than the other.

Can anyone help tell me whats going on here. Is it a dodgy relay, bogey ground wire or something else completely.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Based on the dash lights staying on, I'd go with bad earth. Possibly the earthing from the whole front end of the bike to the main chassis. If he's done a naked conversion, has he earthed stuff to the yokes and is he relying on the power flowing back through there to the battery. If so, it's having to go through the steering bearings which are covered in grease.

So first stop, I would make an earth wire that runs between the bottom yoke and the main chassis (ring terminal on each end is usual, trap it under a bolt with direct contact to bare metal). I would also check the main frame earth points for corrosion.

A decent quality LED flasher relay should flash at the same speed over a wide variety of voltages and current draw. Is it a decent quality flasher relay?

Is there ballast in the system? Did he fit ballast resistors in series with each flasher? This is still a pervasive practice by motorcycle mechanics and LED indicator suppliers which, while it makes LED flashers work with a normal relay, negates the whole point of having LED flashers. If you have an electronic relay and there are ballast resistors. I'd remove them.

There is a ground wire connected to the lower yoke connecting back to the harness behind the headlight. I think this is separate to the indicator wiring though, Ill have to take the headlight off and trace what he's done.

I'll need to check the indicator wiring again and make sure he didn't add any resistors along the way.

This is the flash relay I put in

The LEDs staying lit on the display isn't constant, it only happens every now and then.

Thanks for info!
