Good morning guys!
Firstly I do not wish to offend anyone here, as I probably passed, or rather, was passed, by several of you! At first I usually only used the bike for a ride at the weekend, so excuse my amusement / inexperience.
This morning I commuted from Feltham, A312 and through the A40 till Euston, a route I'd already done by car several times.A312 is easy, and on the A40 at first it was rather easy to pass through standstill/slow moving traffic, but after hanger lane I have to say I was too uneasy to do it! There's just not that much space!
I was impressed, and a bit worried, by all the guys in big scooters and bikes wiggling through cars and lorries,, at some point a guy on a little scooter beeped at me because he wanted to filter faster! I did it in just over an hour, which was still 30 minutes less than the train , but these guys could probably do it in 45 minutes.
I do have bar end mirror sticking out, which probably doesn't help, I have to turn them downwards when I get home as they increase width by 10 or 20cm.
So, thoughts, is everyone crazy or am I not crazy enough?? And do you have any tips?

Agree with TG.
Relax and go your own pace, if you genuinely want to filter faster and learn, practice at quieter times.
Keep an eye out behind you if you are going slow though. Nothing worse than being stopped from filtering by another biker not paying attention behind them! ____________________ 1993 RF400R - 2002 Bandit 1200 - 2012 1250 FA |

I hate the run up to the TT as I'm always late for work due to people with panniers on for the first time / once a year on their way towards the docks for the ferry who either can't or won't filter when I can / am happy to and won't let me pass, even when I can get into a clear lane to the side of them to pass comfortably, they cut me off (gits)
Keep an eye on your mirrors from time to time and if someone's been behind you for a while tuck back into traffic and give them a wave past, they might not go much quicker than you, or they might zoom off into the distance, who knows. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Fixed I knew that but I couln't remember the term when I was writting
Today I turned the mirrors downwards, made a world of a difference! Although then I had to kind of "duck" down to be able to see properly Today it took me about 10 minutes less although I left at 7:30 instead of 7.

This. Then they'll be the one hopefully waking up the dozy buggers in their cars to the fact that there are bikes coming through, rather than you... |
That's a very good point!
I'm always glancing at the mirrors and looking over my shoulder, apparently shaking a let at you is some form of thanks now-a-days

Tbh I haven't had a since driver complain or act aggressive, I think if there weren't for the small % of crazies swerving like maniacs causing panic, all drivers would just let us go about our business. Having driven more than ridden, I have never been bothered by bikes and I always moved over, so I figure there's no reason for other drivers o be upset either unless we're being hunts. They just cut in and are off sooner than you get there, if anything it makes the driver drive in a calmer manner! I personally can say my driving has improved in the few months I started riding safety/attention wise, and I already had high standards.
I also found my right hand started becoming a bit stiff, I ride with 2 fingers on the brakes and there's tons of that to do so I started using the rear one more. Anyone who filters will become a clutch and brake master in short time.[/quote] |

By the day, does anyone have an opinion on alternatively taking the Great West Road and A4 (Not the M4 as I'm on cbt) instead of the A40/A312? It's 3 miles shorter, but all the memories I have of driving on that stretch are of being surrounded by lorries for a long time
Or should I start another thread to ask that?
Or is there already a sticky with info on usual routes into and out of places? Actually that would make a great thread to keep around and stop ppl like me reposting
