I keep meaning to go as it's not that far away from me, but haven't got round to it yet.

Can you actually get near the stones these days?

AFAIK there is a fence about 20 or so metres away from the stones.

They want to build a tunnel underneath for the A303 traffic don't they? Confused

Roads are mediocre, watch out carefully for the speed camera's.

they hide them up on hills etc. Roads are fast, with plenty of overtaking space which I like.

The stones are quite boring, and you can not get close enough to touch them. However I wouldnt want to touch them, there are plenty of stones on my house.

On the 9th/10th April, it would be an ideal place to go before BSB at thruxton, where you could camp overnight with many other bikers at watch the races the following day Question Idea

guys, the stones are amazing. They still cant work out to this day how they managed to put them up, and the stones are from bloody wales, which is f-ing long way from the henge. Should be proud of the kind of history we have. America aint got Sh*t on this, they only have about 500 odd years of history anyway! You cant go near the stones anymore cos people started carving their names in them and spray painting them.....assholes.
Watch out for cameras half way up the hills (ridiculous cameras, considering you need to get speed up, to get up those steep hills.) Also a favourite spot for camera van etc.

Is the summer solstice toward the end of June? I think a lot of people tend to go down to SH for the solstice just before Glastonbury. If only I were organised enough...

The stone circle at Glasto isn't quite as impressive-

If you like Stonehenge, you'd love Avebury - bigger stones, bigger circle (largest in the world), older site (build approx 2600BC) and you can walk up to and touch most of the stones (except the ones which are in danger of falling over).
Add to that the fact that Silbury Hill (largest prehistoric mound in Europe) and West Kennet Long Barrow (largest longbarrow in Europe) are nearby and there's a lovely pub in the circle and you'll see what I mean.
There's some pretty nice roads round there too!
