I'm in the market for another security device. I currently have the Oxford BIG Boss Alarm Lock & Chain 12mm x 1.5m.
I'm looking for input and everyone's thoughts on these types of chains and padlocks as opposed to other types of security devices. How do they stack up against the curly armour type ones for example? The loose chain link ones like what I've got already seem to be more expensive, does that mean BETTER? Would you favour one brand over another or just go for maximum thickness of the chain links to increase security? Also how easy is it to break one of these 12mm chains with an angle grinder or similar tool? ____________________

I swear by my Doberaner system personally. One foot on my driveway after dark and it goes off something alarming.

Also works pretty well as a visual deterrent when all six stone of her is bellowing her head off on the kitchen windowsill.
You can't really get onto my plot without first passing her window. Like CCTV, a bouncer and an alarm all in one. Got a plumber
due over in a hour or two, I predict she's going to do her absolute nut at him. Again. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I ordered the Oxford big boss because it seems to be a brand that is around everywhere (sportsbikeshop.com and Halfords etc.). The chain is 12mm, the padlock has a built in alarm (100db) and I think is either 14mm or 16mm so nobody in their right mind is going to target the strongest link (the padlock) they'll get an angle grinder to the chain right?
Here's my thinking though... If you're going to put an angle grinder to the chain do you REALLY need an alarm? Surely the noise of trying to hack through the chain is going to make more noise than the alarm and draw more attention to what that person is doing?
With that in mind, before waiting for anyone's advice (making this threat fucking pointless) I've gone with the Oxford Nemesis as it's 16mm chain and padlock and available in 2m length. Longer and thicker than the 1.5m 12mm big boss I already have and cheaper too but has no alarm. I think it'll give better protection...
I think alarms are largely useless as devices in themselves anyway. How many times have you heard a car or building alarm going off and ignored it? People don't pay any attention to alarms, and even if they do notice someone is trying to steal something they certainly don't get involved. This was proven by the time I took an angle grinder to a wheel clamp. Had a small crowd of onlookers. Nobody tried to intervene. Only thing an alarm will do is act as a deterrent. If it gets to the point where the criminal has set it off it's now pointless having the bloody thing. ____________________

Depends on your budget really. Mind you, security is one of those investments that stays even if you replace the bike - take the initial hit and you're done for a while.
Alarms are ignored now as you say. Heck even the birds here copy alarm calls FFS! Big dogs (or even little ones) make burglars think twice - leaving chewed dog toys and dog bowls around the garden is a good idea - you don't actually need a dog!
Those 'electric keys' have become a nightmare. Sure they're handy but they're a dream for burglars. They'll cut through almost anything.
Here's a few good links if cost isn't too much of an issue. Some systems use a thick pin which goes through a gap between the engine and frame. Those are much easier to secure up.

The choice is endless. There are other good makes out there too.
If you're unsure, head to YouTube because some channels do nothing but pick locks like those. Make sure to check out how sh*tty those locks can be which go through brake discs - remember too that brake discs can be unbolted and the bike wheeled away with the lock in place. ____________________ CCM 404 DS |
