Let's just say hyperthetically I am looking for new motorcycle. Am I better off going for

- a newer (2015) model with high mileage, potentially more worn but probably well looked after.

Or

- or an older (2011) with lower mileage. Used only occasionally, low wear but barely broken in.

I am intending to use the bike for commuting about 60mile round trip 4 or 5 days a week. So reliability would be critical.

In favour of the high mileage: age-limited components will be in better condition such rubber hoses/seals, tyres etc. plus corrosion in theory should be lower (but if a young-ish bike has been neglected and used in salty conditions a lot it won't necessarily be any less corroded, depending on the owner!).

In favour of the older bike: mileage-limited bits will probably be good, stuff like discs, pads (possibly - do the degrade with age?), engine internals if the oil has been changed frequently enough.

No idea on how good the prices are, but I'd be leaning towards the older model: with 5k miles at that age, chances are it goes in the garage over winter and quite possibly only comes out in dry weather. The other one is probably used all through the year.

Out of those two? The higher mileage one... but that's because the lower mileage one you picked has bits missing and is sold by a dealer who doesn't have the best reputation.

I'd forget both and look for another Street Triple if I'm honest.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Cheers mar

TBH those were just examples, I am not buying for a couple of months. Was just wondering what people's thought were on that subject. Looking for a few tips on what is considered too high etc.
