Hi,
One for the painters out there.
the 2 side panels on my tdr came with f*cked paintwork on the 2 rear side panels.
Seriously the worst paint job I've ever seen.
I just thought the previous owner just f*cked it up & it would be no problem flatting it back down & giving it a quick coat of rattle can black.

Nope.
paint cracked.

Ok, flatten back even more & use a plastic primer.
It's marked as "high build" but from previous experience its actually not very thick or really high build, perfect for this type of thing as there's no scratches or damage of any kind & i've had great results before with this stuff (especially with the odd pin hole etc)

Even that cracked. After the 1st fine coat!

Seems I'm not the only person whos ran into this kind of problem after speaking to a couple of other tdr owners who've tried painting these panels.

TL/DR The panels are marked on back as AES.

What sort of special treatment/products does this type of plastic need?

That sounds like "ABS". I have heard that a mist spray of acetone (which is not as aggressive, volatile or dangerous as butanone) and then spray when it's *just* dulled is the way to go (from an "in house" painter of plastic bumpers), but I have never done that.

Edit: Yes, they're similar plastics. Unsure of what acetone does under similar circumstances to AES though.

Never heard that trick before Thinking
Painted plenty abs & bumpers before & never had issues like this
A bit of googling suggests AES is quite different from ABS though.
I guess that means another hour flattening it back down Rolling Eyes
Thank f*ck I've a spare set of plastics as this was just the joining piece which is quite small, the actual panels would take ages!

If it's being that problematic and you just want it black, why don't you vinyl wrap it?

Binning. It needs binning. Just bin all the plastic and never worry about it again. Thumbs Up

Hi,
Its not that I WANT it black, it's just it came black but a mess.
It ruins the look of the bike.
The fronts silver, original paintwork & decals (mostly) a wee bit scruffy but perfectly acceptable for a 10yr old 125 enduro/sm with ypvs.

But it's like 2 different bikes, fine at front, sh*t at back.
I've done all the mechanical stuff, carb, exhaust etc
So im just doing the the final touches before fitting the plastics (which are essential btw) which I hoped to do this weekend.
& I thought it would be a quick easy job to rattle can it, with a smooth finish rather than the weird crackled effect it came with.
But I've just opened a can of worms.......

Anyway it seems <AES> is pretty much the same stuff as <ASA> if that helps anyone give me advice on how to paint it so I learn something, as I've never has this problem before when painting, either by aerosol or gun.

tbh it's curiosity really & now stubbornness has kicked in.

TLDR I've never tried vinyl wrapping but I did consider it, as although the 2 "larger" panels (they're not that big on a tdr125) are curved, I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult, however that wee joining piece has small wavy lines engraved into it & I reckon that it would be a cnut to wrap over....unless I fill them in with enough high build primer Very Happy

Very Happy bike functions fine trust me, better now than it did when I got it & it will be maintained to same standards as my other bikes but unfortunately it would likely fail it's MOT without those rear panels with the exposed subframe sharp edges plus rain would get into the exposed wiring.
Nice idea though Laughing

Might be irrelevant , but if you spray regular aerosol over enamel type paint it will crack as the aerosol solvent melts the coat underneath. Has anyone painted it with a cheap supermarket type aerosol??

You could go for water based paint then two pack lacquer over that.

Yup, looks like that's what the previous owner (who in a short time of owning it made a complete mess of some things) had done.
No idea why.
Nothing too major, just cosmetic & general lack of basic maintenance (guy was a muppet who knew nothing about 2t's either)
I've managed to rescue it by getting some cheap replacement panels from France for little money.
So in a couple of weeks it should be in much better shape.
Parts are all there, & as soon as I get time, it will be reassembled within a weekend (weather permitting)
Unfortunately real life & family stuff gets in the way sometimes Wink
