just thought id let you lot know i passed my CBT today, will be picking up a 125 ped in a week or 2 (yes a ped, as much as i despise them i gotta have one if im getting on the road as im a newb with feck all experience on a geared bike and cant use gears... yet) any advice as of which peds are fast and good? just need 1 that i can use 3 days a week for college and then going around with friends on weekends, speed doesnt matter that much but i want to be able to go 60 on it because i have a few fast roads near me
any advice/suggestions welcome Mr. Green

Ooooh, expect plenty of "gears are easy" posts then! Very Happy Congratulations on the passing of the cbt though. Thumbs Up

Hmm, 125 ped, 60mph. Not really hard to find one, is it? Most 125 peds will do 60mph at the top end. Two strokes would be better (runner 125?) and nippier but if 60mph is all you need, then go for any, bar a cheap japanese import.

How about a DNA 125? Not terribly fast I imagine, in scooter terms, but they look better than most peds in my opinion. Smile

or a quicker alternative:

Not too sure if they make the two stroke version of that gilera anymore though, but I'm sure you can pick one up second hand no problem.

Got any prices/models in mind?

Get a geared 125 Thumbs Up everybody has to start from not knowing how to use them, did you not learn how to on the CBT?

Few hours in a car park and you will be ready to go and able to ride something that is 10 times better in every way Thumbs Up

Gears are easy Rolling Eyes

I hope I'm the first of many, they're a lot scarier in your head than they are in reality.

After a days CBT on a geared bike you're doing it without thinking.

no not really price is 1,500 at a maximum but dont really want to have to spend any more than about 1,200 or 1,000
i just dont want a speedfight 2 because 95% of bikes/peds at college are speedfight 2's

'gears are easy'
Smile

Got any mates with geared bikes? If you have you could see if one would show you the ropes on a carpark; though try and make it a tattier bike to borrow Smile.
If not, I'm sure you can find someone to show you how to do it in a quiet area if you get your own geared bike.

Within a week you'll be fine; most people are a bit wobbly with them for the first week or so after the CBT anyway.

Take a scour on ebay and see what scooters there are for £1500 or less in your area. They generally go for less on ebay, but just be careful and don't buy the first thing you see. Thumbs Up

True, £1500 can buy you an rs125 or it can buy you a scooter. Whatever you're most comfortable on. I wouldn't recommend an rs125 for a first bike anyway, so if gears are DEFINETELY not for you at the moment, go for a second hand scoot.

Personally, I'd say go with a cheap 4 stroke commuter as an alternative to a scooter. Will have similar power and top speed to the scoot's but should feel more stable at speed.
Can be got for not much and maybe even sold for more when you're comfortable on a bike.

yes they are easy... only trouble i had on the cbt with them was changing down in gears didnt help that the gear stick was prob fecked up though, it doesnt really bother me as i have hardly any road experience anyway so i just plan to get a ped for a year or something and then get a geared bike, i dont know anyone with a bike let alone a geared bike, a few friends are getting bikes 1 of which passed his cbt today also and i think its best not to get a geared bike yet as my instructor said to me today that if i got a geared bike and went on the road on it, basically... im fucked Laughing and its not worth getting a cheap geared bike (for me anyway) so im thinkin ped it is

Why do you say it's not worth getting a cheap geared bike, looks?

From people that I've talked to that got a >50cc ped as a first bike, most have regretted not getting a 'real' bike.

One way or another I reckon you could get used to it pretty quickly, even if it meant buying a local BCFer some beers to help out Smile.

Bite the bullet and get gears Smile If you intend on riding bigger bikes eventually then you're gonna have to at some point - might as well be now. They are easy. You'll feel much more satisfied if you do.

If you only ever intend on riding scooters stick with twist and go Thumbs Up

You might be close to Jon B.

A cheap 125 commuter is a good idea IMO, I know I'd regret it if I had a ped.

If you were only after a 50cc, then I'd say go for a twist and go, as with a top end of 30mph and (say) 5 gears, you'll be changing up every 6mph, and the same back down again, which is a lot of sodding about for that speed.

Since, however, you are after a 125cc, and as long as you intend to progress to a larger bike sometime, then trust us when we say gears are easy. The hardest part of all is just finding the biting point of the clutch and pulling away in first. Once you've done that a couple of times, just going up and down your street, you can then worry about changing to second. Initially, this can be as slow as you need it to be, to be comfortable - you're not trying to beat someone off the lights, nor attempting clutchless changes. This doesn't need to be as precise (for want of a better word) as pulling away, as the bike is already in motion and won't stall, unless you've crawled to a virtual stop in the meantime, that is Smile Soon you'll be changing up and down from first to second with increasing fluidity, and then you can start using the rest of the gears.

It shouldn't take no more than an hour to get the pulling away in first off to a tee, and another hour or two changing up and down from second, so in one morning or afternoon you'll be out on the road.

If you took your CBT on a geared bike, and the instructor passed you, why would he say you'd be fucked if you went out on the road on a geared bike?

i took the cbt on a geared bike and failed (couldnt change down the gears because of the crappy cg gear stick) and kept stalling, i have no problem changing up gears (ok mabe bunny hoppin a bit but you can get rid of that after a day or 2 of practise) and where i went for the cbt we get a free few hours extra training so i decided to switch to a ped and get the cbt insted of going back on the gears for 20 minutes and then a 2 hour rideout (chances are i wouldnt have even made it to the ride out i was so bad at the gears) so i passed the cbt on a ped, and after chatting to a few friends about it turns out every single one of them did their cbt on a ped Rolling Eyes
