For a long time, a cheap car (any car) that worked, with a year's MOT, had a base price of about £200. Now it seems to be about £450.

What about for motorbikes?

£500-£750, unless you luck out or buy a long term project.

I regularly see cars for £200-£00, but they tend to be shitty Corsa's that no doubt need at least twice whatever you buy it for in parts to pass another MOT.

Yep £500 for any car with over 6 months MOT sounds about right. My youngest is driving one of those shitty Corsas right now and I only had to replace the entire exhaust system to get it through the last MOT

Funny how bikes are more valuable in that regard but given that 100% of the maintenance is possible on a bike. A car not so much

Had to get a dremel in the end to get the nuts off the Corsa's manifold.

I like shitty little Corsas, its much cheaper to pick one up and drive it round til the MOT runs out.

Cheaper than Ubering and Zipcar-ing.

My fella was too big/too old/too arthritic eventually to fit in a Corsa comfortably, so I bought a couple of other old bangers (memorably a Rover that looked like a Jag, god I loved that car) ... but unless youre proper minted, there's really no point buying a decent car in London, too much risk of prangs.

I'm actually currently thinking about having another one, but I need something with a tow bar for the coffin trailer.
