I am a new rider and I have just bought a Yamaha yzf r125. The bike has an aftermarket exhaust with no muffler and when I went to go get my MOT done, I was told the exhaust was too loud. I don’t know what brand the exhaust is so I can’t find a muffler for it. I don’t know what to do to make the exhaust quieter. Would any muffler do? It’d be helpful if someone could give me advice on what to do to make the exhaust quieter for my bike.
Thanks.

Impossible top say without knowing what's been done to the rest of the exhaust system.

Post or link some pics so we can see what sort of exhaust and mu... I mean silencer it's got on it.

Or try and find a more sympathetic MOT station ... was this raised at all at previous MOTs?

You should be able to get a less antisocial end can.
If it can easily be removed check the pipe diameter and have a look around.

It wouldn't be the end of the world to replace the entire system especially if it is getting tatty.
They aren't cheap but then it would be sorted and a selling point if you trade in.

Problems might occur such as previous owner having messed about trying to get it to run properly with current set up.

Measure the diameter of the exhaust outlet and search Internet for a generic baffle.
I.e, 42mm exhaust baffle

He has literally no end can I assume. Unless by 'muffler' he means 'baffle'.

OP, post a pic.

Get a potato, a knife and a hammer. Use the knife to trim the potato into the shape of a wine cork. Then hammer the potato up the exhaust pipe.

Shheesh. Just throw away your "performance" silencer and buy a stock one, like this, for only £30 "buy it now"... you will have to hurry! It will sell fast.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-YZF-R125-exhaust-2008-2012/183779865644?hash=item2aca22342c:g:u5IAAOSwh0NckI54

Then you can get your MOT no problem.

Good advice. It drives me nuts the way a lot of young lads rip off the exhaust and usually the air box too and mess up their 125 in the quest for more 'power' and then call the bike a 'cafe racer'. It is so fked up!

In reality though the bike makes a lot of noise the power and carburetion are usually totally messed up.

Best advice for the op is to try and put a standard exhaust back on and just hope to hell the previous owner didn't mess about with the carb and air filter system.

Sorry to say, I can remember doing the same sort of stupid butchery on a BSA bantam fifty years ago. What a mug I was.

I have only been to one MOT so maybe I should try others in case I went to a fussy MOT however it would be nice to be on the safe side and quieten my bike.

Baffle and gumgum to get through and then remove if you want. Repeat each year.

I'm surprised that you are surprised that it failed. That LOOKS loud.

You can buy a cheap baffle on ebay but your exhaust is a 'serpent' design that means a straight up baffle might not fit.

You could try one of these maybe?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Exhaust-Muffler-Baffle-DB-Killer-Silencer-42-45-48mm-Universal-UK/263870090183?hash=item3d6fe20bc7:m:mmrqxWFa61bvPXxgPMibiBA

If the MOT tester sees you've made an effort he might feel sorry for you, but honestly this is kind of what you have to expect with aftermarket exhaust systems.

That's a straight-through pipe, and the flared design means it probably works like a horn to make it incredibly loud.

You can fit a generic baffle as suggested (buy one that's as long as possible) to fit the aperture of the end of your pipe. You can fit it with Gun gum to just get it through the MOT, or drill a hole and affix it permanently. I would suggest you affix it permanently. I'm a fan of loud exhausts but I must say, a 125 will sound like a pneumatic drill and it's unmistakeable to NIMBYs as anything other than a bike. People get angry about them more than Harleys with Screaming Eagles, or ricer cars. You don't want the attention.

I suspect that someone has put something entirely inappropriate on there, judging by the letters on the inside of the thing viewed from the back: "OMO".

It might not actually run very well, but you'll be able to tell.

Maybe it's supposed to be something like this:

You could try a different tester, exhaust noise is a very grey area, it's one of the very few things that is entirely down to the tester's judgement, we don't use a decibel meter.

It's worth remembering that we aren't actively looking to fail, so I would be interested to know if that was the only thing it failed on - I absolutely hate the noise from an unsilenced 125, which this obviously is, but if the bike was in otherwise good condition, I wouldn't pick that as the only opportunity to fail.

From (yank) website:

"This product is intended to be used only on racing vehicles on closed courses, and not for use on roads or vehicles otherwise subject to emission control requirements (including non-racing ATVs, Dirt bikes, and UTVs)."

It might increase power by 4%, it also says. Hm. Probably not across all the range...

Swap for a legal one for MOT time (and all other times).

You will find that all MOT stations will fail that exhaust as it is now on the system.

Put an OE system on it and sell the other one a it will cause you trouble if you keep it on. It's a sure way to attract Plod.

It seems from the website that this model of exhaust gives "up to 4% extra power on average, depending on what it's fitted to, at some point in the rev range".

So a guess could be he'd lose somewhere between -x BHP and +0.59BHP somewhere in the rev range depending on whether a YZF-R125 is particularly well "improved" by exhaust modifications. What is gained (or lost!) at other points in the rev range is a moot point, since I can't find any measurements.

So with the OE exhaust it could be unnoticeably more or less powerful, it would have to be measured to actually find out...

Also, four stroke singles are freakin' loud anyway. And like four cylinder cars, they tend to sound a bit rubbish, especially the R125.
