What's the minimum door width for getting a bike through?

I have a 650mm gate to my back yard which is going to be impractical for getting a bike through regularly so I ma going to put in a bigger gate. Builder has asked me the minimum width so he can go up to the next standard size. Has anyone any advice/experience on a minimum size for regularly easy access of a bike through a gate - bikes will be Honda CRF250L and BMW 650GS. Maybe a Ducati Monster 821 later... cheers

I have a 44" door on my garage and my 650GS fits through it with room to spare. It may well fit through a smaller door but go for the biggest you can get, the last thing you want is to scratch a bike just for the sake of a few quid for a wider door

Why look to get the minimum? Why not ask the builder what the biggest there is in your budget?

CRF250L will not fit up there, without removing handlebars, even with external gate removed, distance between walls is about 780mm (just measured it) it varies a little along the length of the passageway

Over the years I've squeezed a Superdream, CB200, Zontes 125 and PXR50 up there. Have an extra wide gate at the end for the turn into the garden.

XR250, CRF250L wouldn't fit without taking bars off.

900mm+ is needed. My trail bikes Renthal bars allow about 4-5" clearance in the side passage and gate.

You'll get away with slightly a narrower gate than the passageway, especially if your passage way is a fair bit wider than the gate, as you can turn the bars to get one bar through first. Again if your bikes are road bikes with narrower bars then a narrower gate could be usable if you had to.

But as others have said, why limit yourself? If my passageway was 900mm then I'd want an 800mm wide gate or close to it.

Depends. If you're going straight in then slightly narrower than the bars can be done as you can walk it through the doorway.

If you're going in at an angle then you need wider. Walking the bike past the entrance then reversing in can be easier.

I widened a garden gate by one brick width previously in order to make life easier. That was accessed via a narrow alleyway, so head on was not possible.

Wider the better.

Just fit a double gate and be done with it. Assuming you can.

Thanks for all the advice, limited by space and budget but we think we can get an 1100 mm gate to fit so should be covered for most bikes. Cheers
