Hi all,
As my test dates are coming up I settled for a nice 93 CB400 SF for just over 1k. It's mostly tidy and crash free, only has some minor bits to tidy I noticed as I cleaned it down.

1-One of the mirrors is quite loose, but the stalk in't actually threaded, it's got a wood rasp surface that fits into a bit that then screws into the mirror supports. I guess it's what makes it adjustable, but I've never seen this.

2-For maintenance I'd really like a centre stand like on my 125, I found only 1 on ebay , the bolt holes look a bit small, but I'm not sure, I'll need to source some bolts from somewhere too.
3-When off it does not really go through the gears (my 125 goes perfect 1-N-5), and when running it's HARD to find neutral. I was going to adjust the clutch but It's only got a few threads left and defo don't want it not fully engaging after. Although I just tried now and it went 1-N-1-N good (off, but neutral light lit up) so I dunno...
I also found it's a bit harder to downshift smoothly, but I prob need to get used to the throttle response.
4-The steering lock does't engage, I can push the key down but it won't turn left, I've sprayed some WD40 down the keyhole, but maybe the lock bolt is stuck?
5-I plan to take some of the alum bits off to refurbish.

Any recommendations for this? I thought the engine was dirty with oil streaks, but it looks like fading paint. I want to clean it all and either make it shine or paint it again. Also, after removing the cover I noticed my radiator is full of gunk!!!
Also, one of the reasons I bought it is it was ULEZ exempt, well I think I fucked it up when putting the reg in the TFL checker because it is not Work is in Euston so I only have till the ulez expansion 10/21 |

Good idea to replace all the fluids, might as well since it'll be sat for awhile. PO has recently had some things fitted so a full service wouldn't be costly.

I'd simply replace the clutch cable, that solves the adjustment if it's not just been adjusted badly at one end.
Unsure if they come with centre stand mounts I never looked, either way jog that idea on and just use a paddock stand. Half the price, half the effort.
Fuck knows on the mirror though! |
Hah, I think I'll have a hard time parting with it, hope I can afford one of the complying modern classics (W700, CB1100, V7), maybe one of the scramblers, or a street twin. As long as it has min 200 mile range.
Centre stand...It does have two metal brackets sticking out the bottom, however sometimes I find putting my 110kg 125 on the stand hard...so at 195~ prob no good. Gonna see about a paddock.
Think I'll buy a spare clutch/throttle cable just in case.
I'm just afraid that if I tighten the cable more it more it will not engage fully. Also read somewhere that it would be a stiff spring or warped clutch plates as well, I'll probably try the cable first, could just be what it is and that's all.

Good idea at all but a bit too permanent no? I does have some powdery black stuff inside, I wonder if it's dry old grease?
Not sure about the matchstick maybe a paperclip or some tape
I have some bar end mirrors on my 125, great for filtering, but you have to look down to see (BAD!) |

I saw a few paddocks, but decided to go with the centre stand, made a lower price offer and got it.
I understand the paddock would be better to have at home, but atm am very short on space and I'd be tripping over it. Secondly, centre stand goes with the bike everywhere... Maybe when I don't have two bikes hogging the garage.
Also, since I can't ride it, I decided to take it apart
It's pretty good for a 26 y/o, hardly any just spots and only surface, but I wanna clean, polish, re-rust, paint, grease and tighten everything that needs i and flush all fluids. Radiator needs to come off to clean anyway. (honeymoon period hah)
I found a russian manual too that Word kindly translated to English and it's pretty good for the most part. If anyone wants drop a message.
Only bit that nags me is the steering lock, even though I have alarm disc lock and chain, It's one thing I got to get fixed. |
