Change is long overdue, last done about 5 years ago.
Is it fine just to detach the rad hose and reservoir tank, train the lot out and refill, or is there some benefit of getting garden hose and blasting thru the system from the filler hole and let it drain out?

Is it clean, or not? That is the question.

You won't be "blasting" the system, you're just allowing any loose material to flow out. I poured tap water from a jug. The system was clean as it turned out, but why wouldn't you do this before refilling with coolant?

Normal flushing is in the reverse direction to water pump flow.

So that would be from the bottom rad pipe through the block.
Remove all plugs from the cooling system and drain.

Fill with clean water a few times and drain.

Fill with coolant and allow any trapped air to bleed out.
Sometimes just filling the system very slowly will allow the bubbles to float out.
I generally depends on design of the engine whether there are air-pockets that can trap air or not.

Starting the engine can blow the bubble out but do not let it get too hot.
Air doesn't conduct heat as well as coolant and that's why air in the system is not a good thing.
