can you do this with a bike when parking? only just popped into my head but....... if your parking a bike on a stretch of road that is filled up with cars (like my town centre) can you park your bikes on the pavement? I once spoke to a traffic warden and she said when it comes to cars parking on the pavement it's fine so long as their is 2 pram widths of pavement left for pedestrains (that's the words she used).

pavements are more convenient too as they have sign posts and lamp posts to chain your bikes up.

tell me if any of these scenarios are illegal and would result in a ticket:

1. chained up to the lampost in the middle of this pic (leaving 2 pram widths):

https://www.southlakeland.gov.uk/images/on_street_parking.jpg

2. on the grass chained up to this lampost:

https://www.tinotopia.com/gallery/albums/in-the-suburbs/street_parking.jpg

3. if this road was flat, had loads of cars parked up and had a lampost to chain the bike too:

https://heanortown.tripod.com/shop3.jpg

4. My town centre looks abit like this, would I be allowed to park on this pavement if I left 2 pram widths their for pedestrians

https://www.holaccom.fsnet.co.uk/ely/171b.jpg

also their are plenty or pavements in uni that are out of the way (save me paying a fortune for the car park they just built)

Hey, there's another guy on the forum who started a very similar thread to this - ask him!

i'm in newport btw, parking cars in newport and cardiff town centre can be a right bitch unless you have spazmobility cards to put up in the window - I tend to park my car no-where near town and walk in. Parking on the pavement when I get my 535 would be great if it's legal.

i saw a tv program about thi in london. aparently people were covering their number plates and parking them up. The wardens arent allowed to mess with your bike so they cant take the cover off the plate and therefore cant give you a ticket Thumbs Up

Anyway my vaguely sensible answer in the other post of the same topic which I tried to reply to but couldn't because it had been deleted after I had opened it was....

It all depends on where you are. In most parts of London they will give you a ticket before you get your gloves off. It's maybe best to ask someone local. Where are you?

I'm not a silly bastard when it comes to parking my bike up. I won't dump it on the pavement where I feel it is either 1/ an extremely busy pavement or 2. is not wide enough for a wheelchair and another person to fit beside my bike on the pavement.

Its good up here in glasgow though, you can physically dump it anywhere, theres SOO many places, where nobody will bat an eyelid.

Thought parking on the pavement had something to do with being allowed 1 wheel on the pavement therefore would only get a ticket if you dont have a centre stand although dont hold me to that

I've done that by removing my tax disc and taping a plastic bag over my plate and still got a ticket. What can you actually do then?

Call the police and say "I parked my bike illegal and removed my tax disc, put a bag over my number plate and the parking warden must have removed it as I got given a ticket but he's not allowed to remove the bag over my number plate"?

could always just fix your plate with velcro I suppose - may get people nicking the plate or they could even have it towed away.

I reckon that the best advice if you don't want a ticket, is don't park illegally, rather than trying ways to avoid a ticket.....easy innit?

There are always places you can tuck a bike.

I have been told by a legal adviser that it is against the law to obstruct the pathway.

But you can tuck in between two cars if they leave a bigger gap than needed. We've all seen the rows of cars parked, with 1/2 car sized gaps in?.........those are deliberately left by thoughtfull drivers especially for bikes Wink

Don't worry about it. I looked at your profile and your in Newport. It looked kind of like a street in Burnham on Sea that I have been to thats all.

As for parking on the pavement, make sure its very well secured. Don't want the local kids taking an interest do you.

yeh I do, I live just outside cardiff (newport). All those photos are just google images I quickly ran a search for roads and pavements to use as examples.

I can only speak for London, but you won't get away with this.

I lost a court case last year about exactly this... I'm still not sure I understand why!

I was parked on private property (outside my office) where I had been every day for 18 months. This was one of those little nooks with those pavement glass squares that lead off the pavement. Big sign saying 'private property - no parking'

One day, i come out for lunch to find ticket on moped. Find warden and explain to him - Private Property etc etc, but he could hardly speak english, let alone read it.

To cut a long story short, correspondence ensued for about a 18 months - I was trying to get the case thrown out on the grounds that the warden was trespassing by coming on to private property and fiddling with my possessions. Ended up in court with land registry blueprints, photos - the lot. I lost as apparently it is illegal to obstruct a public footpath regardless of who owns the property. I argued that it was only obstructive if you were trying to walk in to the wall. No dice. I lost. It occupied SO much of my time too - they don't read ANYTHING you send them. They just churn out automated responses - I would ask questions and the response would come back with none of the issues raised even being acknowledged. Plus, my favourite little 'f*ck you' is that you only ever have 14 days to respond to them, and yet I once waited 7 months for a reply to my letter (and, as expected, none of my queries was answered or even mentioned).

And yet in Soho, where I work now there are cars and bikes parked on the pavement with bags over the numberplate everywhere...

Last one out turn off the lights please... Thumbs Down

Did a stupid thing the other day. Parked my bike on the pavement sloping down and with my bike facing down the hill and forgot what I was doing and put it on the centre stand. Shocked As soon as it was on the stand it came off again and started rolling down the hill Shocked Didn't I feel silly. Embarassed Managed to hold on to it and be dragged by it down the hill and mount it while it was moving without a drop Confused dunno how...

They can only give you a ticket and/or remove the bike if it's a hazard to pedestrians in public places run by the Council.

You cannot do the following;

1) Park on the pavement if it cause the pedestrian to walk around it or having to step off the pavement to get past it.

2) Block an entrance way to a building

3) Park in a pay & view car parking bay as it's only for wheeled vehicles ie cars, vans, etc. not unless authorised to do so by the local Council

You can do the following;

1) Park in a designated cyclist parking area on the pavement as your bike is a cycle not unless authorised to do so by the local Council and so ask a Traffic Warden for confirmation of this as I did in Glasgow's city centre not long ago.

2) Park in a motorcyclist designated parking bay area.

3) Park your bike on private estate as the Police can't touch you there unless the bike is a clear hazard to pedestrians.

4) You can ride along the road on a private estate with it's own road without a helmet and the Police can't do anything because it's not a public road.

Maidstone town Center is the HARDEST place to park a bike. Everywhere is either a pay and display carpark with signs saying they dont allow motorbikes, OR double yellow lines.
I stuck my moped on the pathment in Maidstone and got a £30 fine from a Police man, Not a traffic warden, But a Copper. Shocked
How wank is that...

My dads CBR has a velcro Reg plate and its never been nicked.
