Ouch. Poor chap.

Weird though, that helmet is a proper helmet, as in not a metal military one so would have thought the lightening would strike something metal and earthed, not a plastic helmet on a person with a bike on rubber tyres.

Not sure - in the world of mortals, all we could refer to would be the specific terms of his insurance policy. However, when Zeus takes someone out, Hera or one of the other goddesses can usually swing some kind of recompense for whoever they leave behind, if only because those left behind are instrumental in some other divine sidestory. So his family will get something from some source, I'm sure.

Alternatively, you could follow in the footsteps of Betty Penrose who, in 1969, sued God for $89,000*.

God was accused of "careless and negligent control of the weather", after Betty’s home was destroyed by a lightning strike.

The spark's covered a comparatively very large distance compared to the mere height of a wet tyre and helmet (which are not necessarily good insulators anyway).

A car acts as a faraday cage and you re safer inside because the charge can pass to earth through the conductive metal not because of insulating tyres.
There will be some insulation, which will inhibit the rapid negative charge build up on objects which are about to be struck.

I wonder if carbon fibre is more dangerous, carbon fibre fishing rods are hazardous near power lines.

I doubt the lightning would even have "seen" him. It came up from the ground there, he just happened to be in the way.

It is still in my employer's insurance policy so I guess so, or maybe just very large corporations as we have tons of medical equipment worth ££££ and building infrastructure etc

I know lightning strike is covered under the fire insurance on farms. So they can claim if a cow gets struck by lightning. Happens more often than you'd think.
