Cheap to buy, not too slow, cheap to run? Which bike?

Hello all
After a long absence of bikes in my life i am going to get back into it. Im after a bike but dont really know what to get.

The criteria is:
Got to be more than 30hp
Got to be good on fuel
Gotta be cheap to buy

I was originally thinking of a j1 zx6r or a similar year honda hornet.
But are these going to be abit juicy?

The idea is to commute cheaper than my 330d which gets 38mpg

Er5, GPZ500, er6, GS500, sv650, CB500, pretty much any mid size twin.

Depends what your budget is the bike alone (putting aside tax, M.O.T, insurance, spare parts etc) and if you want a project or a runner from the get go.

If your in no rush I'd just get a trade sale / auction bike of eBay and repair it over time in small parts.

how much is an nc750 (s or x - imo s is better) - they're insanely good on fuel

Yamaha Thundercat. Well into the 50s mpg, pick a half decent one up for £1,500, less for a scruffier one. Mine was as reliable as the sunrise for the 17 years I had it. Can go fast, will cover distance.

Some good suggestions here i diddnt think of.

Wouldnt have thought of a thundercat as effecient being heavy 4cy and carbed but ill look into it 👍 thanks

I assume a twin would be even better mpg though? An ER5 must be great on fuel?

I like the idea of a vfr 400 but i cant imagine theyre good on fuel being ancient AND revvy

I routinely get 60 out of my old gpz500 on my 36 mile commute which is mainly dual carriageway at "70"

Just a friendly instructional tip for you to save you buying an expensive mistake.

1, All parallel twins are totally crap, and it's far preferable to walk instead everywhere.

2, All IL4's are bland and boring and a waste of time too.

My ER5 with 25k miles on it gets about 50mpg commuting in and out of Manchester but overall averages closer to 60mpg with the odd country ride thrown in so I’d guess it’s doing low to mid 60s in the sticks

For fuel economy you won't do much better than an NC750 without going into 125s. Used to average 80mpg on mine on my commute, mixture of rural NSLs, dual carriageway and city filtering. Long run out of the city would return 90mpg plus. Not cheap though, a few coming up at £4k, and the hard rev limit at 5000 rpm (yes really 5 thousand) was super annoying when joining dual carriageways as you'd hit it at about 55mph in second while accelerating down the slipway.

SV650s are cheap enough even new, and plentiful enough second hand that you can shop around for a good example. My 2000 naked curvy returned 65mpg - I can only imagine more modern fuel injected versions would be even better.

Not said what your budget is..Most modernish bikes should return over 50mpg, looking for new, then as has been said the SV650 isn't a bad choice, or, if you like something a little mortraditional looking, the new RE Interceptor/GT650's are decent, and, relatively inexpensive. My interceptor is nicely run in now, and it rides lovely, no problem 2 up going above 80, with plenty more to spare, and, I'm getting over 70mpg on it.
