just ignore the miserable buggers Craig

I for one thank you for emparting your experiences of these bikes
and accept that this no way covers every 500cc out there how ever it does cover all the usual 500cc step up bikes

I for one am thinking of going from my 125 to a GS500 or CB500
and don't see the point in anything bigger..

Thanks again Craig for taking the time and effort to pass on your experiences
Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up

I wasn't moaning about the review (which I do agree is a good one), just about the fact that craig raves about his 500's so much when he can't really compare to anything else.

So Razz

Yes ok dear, the review is good as I said but my point is that we don't all want to hear about your 500's all the time. Now be a good boy and make me a sandwich. Razz

Wotcha.

No no no.

I'm now having nightmares - and they involve Jupiters, Planetas, Voshkods and evil Jawa outfits Laughing

As much as I hate to admit it - I once owned a Jawa 350 outfit for all of twenty minutes . . . and ran a Dneper outfit for about three years. ...................... but I'm OK now.

I think that the gs500f looks great almost like an upright 500 GSXR
but my choice would be the CBF500 but have you looked at the CBF600? Its worth a thought.

Slightly more expensive but i think its worth it

Now if your talking about the best 500cc bikes ever built there are only 2 to mention and these being:
No.1 The Yamaha RD500LC (i want this one!)
No.2 The Suzuki RG500 Gamma

If anyone can offer me a contender for better 500 than a sorted RD then i'll sell me bike and buy a Puch Maxi!

100% unbiast view*....

cx's aren't that rare (have a look on ebay), the longer ive been without mine the more it annoys me i had to get rid... i'll have another for touring e.t.c. as soon as i can...

A carefull buyer could get themselfs a good example for £500 good to ride thousands of miles in excelent comfort and not allot of maintainance, despite its weight its as powerfull as the cb500 in most situations... handleing is more difficult and you have to be bloody brave to push the 70s frame and suspension on the wobbley, same as any other bike of that age really... but its still great fun.

I was set on a cb500 for a year or so before getting a cx, they have larger road presence, comfyer, easyer to maintain and cost less.. in many ways appart from looks, street cred and performance IMO they are just better than many modern 500s

What i'm saying is if you can put up with the looks you will learn to like them, if you are happy to get your hands dirty you will be able to fix 99% of the bike no problem without any specialist gear, you can aim for far off places and not have to particuarly worry about haveing an aa card with you Thumbs Up

But as i tend to allways say to people, test rides, as many as you can blag.. buy with your brain not your heart (me boreing git? with my reputation?)
*99.9% lie, 0.1% unbiast

i couldnt ride the gs500e

due to the fact that when you turned the throttle it would lurch into life and when you let off the throttle it would stop dead!!

cheap to buy and run im sure

but i hated that bike

just my opinion of course

Sorry mate,

Sold it to K.Z bitz on westgate Rd, Newcastle, give them a call (0191) 2619629 . He has sold the pipes, rotor and engine separately. I was knarked Sad about the engine as it only 16K on it and went like, well, like a GPz5 should go, and I had just changed the oil before the shunt Embarassed and put new tyres on it.

Great post, and it lead me to the forum. I was doing a google search for the difference between the 1998 and 2001 model GPZ500s, and this was 2nd on the list that came back! I'm getting a 2001 GPZ on friday, but I've "acquired" a PDF of the workshop manual for the 1998 model.

This forum has kept me chuckling all day, and brightened my boring, temporarily bikeless dole bludger life!
